It's a wonder why they haven't done something like this a long time ago.
Kurdish people are spread across 3 countries: Iraq, turkey and Iran. They are land locked so anything they do would need support from the other nations. Kurdish rebels have been fighting against turkey for years. After the invasion, the USA didn't support dividing the country up because we would have lost turkey support in other areas.

Now Turkey is opening up to the idea of Kurdistan.

What do they expect to gain from that? They were always afraid their own Kurdish population would want to secede.

A buffer from the instability in Iraq. Someone they can actually negotiate with to end Kurdish rebel safe areas. Major trading partner as their oil revenues grow and the Kurds will likely need to export through turkey.

Exactly. Can also add: buffer from ISIL.

Forgot the Syrian Kurds as well. Since Syria is divided like Iraq right now (4 states with Assad being effectively severed from the Kurdish areas), there's actually some talk going on here about that portion of Syria joining up with an independent Kurdistan should/when that happens. It'll be interesting to see for sure.
Just a side note from stories I've been told, like Saddam, Assad hated the Kurds. He never recognized them as citizens and refused to give them things such as passports and identification documents. That was until the civil war. At which point he said, "Hey guys, look. I'll give you the recognition from the government that you've wanted for decades in return for NOT rebelling". And so they didn't rebel. They just fight anyone (including Assad) who tries to come into the Kurdish cities.
But seeing as they are now fully separated from the government by several rebel groups (just like in Iraq) they will most likely give Assad the finger should Kurdistan become independent.
Lastly, one point I forgot to make in my earlier post, Iraq has put an embargo on Kurdistan. They are allowing commerical flights, but no transportation of cargo. This is in response to the Kurdish PM basically saying they will be cutting ties with the central government (although the Kurdish members in the Iraqi Parliament still plan to participate). So this will probably further the push for independence rather than stifle it since pretty much all the Kurds hate Maliki and Iraqi government a crap ton begin with.

Actually this is the only reason the Turks support it. They didn't give a shite about the Kurds until they started producing/exporting oil. With the majors coming in (Chevron, Exxon, etc.) in addition to some of the minors (Hess, DNO, etc.) and the construction of a pipeline expected to carry over 2 million barrels per day, they Turks had a very drastic fairly fast change of heart about the whole issue and the Kurds are more than aware it's only because of their oil exports

Kurds have to make a move now and not back down if they want their own country. Balkanization of Iraq almost done.
