What do they expect to gain from that? They were always afraid their own Kurdish population would want to secede.

Forgot the Syrian Kurds as well. Since Syria is divided like Iraq right now (4 states with Assad being effectively severed from the Kurdish areas), there's actually some talk going on here about that portion of Syria joining up with an independent Kurdistan should/when that happens. It'll be interesting to see for sure.

Just a side note from stories I've been told, like Saddam, Assad hated the Kurds. He never recognized them as citizens and refused to give them things such as passports and identification documents. That was until the civil war. At which point he said, "Hey guys, look. I'll give you the recognition from the government that you've wanted for decades in return for NOT rebelling". And so they didn't rebel. They just fight anyone (including Assad) who tries to come into the Kurdish cities.

But seeing as they are now fully separated from the government by several rebel groups (just like in Iraq) they will most likely give Assad the finger should Kurdistan become independent.


Lastly, one point I forgot to make in my earlier post, Iraq has put an embargo on Kurdistan. They are allowing commerical flights, but no transportation of cargo. This is in response to the Kurdish PM basically saying they will be cutting ties with the central government (although the Kurdish members in the Iraqi Parliament still plan to participate). So this will probably further the push for independence rather than stifle it since pretty much all the Kurds hate Maliki and Iraqi government a crap ton begin with.

Kurds have to make a move now and not back down if they want their own country. Balkanization of Iraq almost done.
