Seattle is just as close to the mountains as Denver...
although to get to some of them you have to take a ferry which is a PITA

DC is a fantastic city to live in.
I might be making the move to DC within a year. I hear great things. The negatives always seem to be the commute and cost of liviing. I would definitely be in the burbs because of schools. Hopefully, it will happen.

I didn't like DC so much at first, but after moving to Arlington I can see how it would be high on the list for young people. Great jobs, decent public trans, and Arlington has a great selection of talent

I've been in DC for about 4 years now and it's by far my least favorite place that I've lived. Horrible traffic, bad weather, mediocre food compared to other big cities, sky high rent in desirable areas, highly intense work culture where long hours are a source of pride. Positive is that there are a lot of smart people, lots to do, and a good job market (why I'm still here.)

I just moved to San Diego so I guess my number one place to visit is now New Orleans to see family

Honestly, if you have a real professional job that enables you to live a nice lifestyle in some of the big Western cities, it's kind of hard to find the time for that sort of stuff regularly. It's a possibility in Denver, Salt Lake City, and to a lesser extent, Portland, but for the rest of the major Western cities (Seattle, SF, LA, etc), it's a PITA to balance a successful professional life with the excellent local outdoor opportunities.
I live in Seattle, am an IT professional, and go up in the mountains about every other weekend from April/May until football season starts

It can be a hell of a rat race, but with average pay you can get a few roommates and live like a king until you actually want to buy a house.

What's the job market like in Denver right now? I'm looking for a new place to hang my hat after the first of the year and the Denver area is on my list.
I have lots of experience in healthcare, insurance, and entertainment. Quite the mixed bag.

We need to classify what is big.

Pretty good for IT related jobs which is the industry I am in. I would imagine it is pretty solid overall but have nothing to back that up

If we're just making general lists, then to live, I'd probably include Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, KC, SLC, Denver, Birmingham and Charlotte.
You could probably make good arguments for Pittsburgh and some Ohio cities, but I can't speak much about them.
But all of those places are relatively inexpensive, several have good to very good economies, half have good natural features and Texas/GA/NC have strong higher ed.

I don't think I could ever live in a place that has so little sunshine.

Good for o&g at the moment. That could all change if the libtards pass the statewide fracing ban they want on the ballot this November.

SLC
used to travel there on business and really liked the city and everything that Utah has to offer. Might add it to the area to check out for my next move.
