and what would you propose, as a system, if you could change it all?
I would go back to the old system, with one caveat. I would devise a system, doesn't have to be via government, but some system, which can control the price gouging for services. Go look at what a hip replacement costs here vs. other developed countries.
The right will tell you that the cost is higher here because of lawsuits, but this is nonsense. Texas has had tort reform for years and health care costs have continued to rise.
The fact of the matter is that when you're sick, you're in no position to act as a consumer the way you were if you needed a new TV or a car. And furthermore the system is intentionally obscured from the patient so that nobody really knows how much everything is going to cost. Try asking your surgeon what it's going to run you, he probably doesn't know.
The system as a whole needs to be reformed, but i don't think government is the answer, in fact if we had smaller government in this particular field it would be more likely to be successful, as crony capitalism has and will continue to destroy the republic in the wake of Citizens United.

I'll never understand why people on here care so much about what goes on in England and France

Is this you caring or not caring about what happens in other countries? I can't tell.

Good post. It's amazing that you are such an Obamabot/apologist yet hold such a fundamental disagreement on the role of government. One is left wondering if youre a little touched in the head.

Well... if one thinks that a state-controlled system is the way to go, then move to one of the many countries that practice top-down policy. Why is there a need for liberals/progressives to turn the one free place in the history of the world into one of the other countries?

Hahaha! So what did we do to "improve" the healthcare system? We expanded healthcare to follow the same shitty system instead of making free market based reforms. Is our healthcare system perfect? No, but I would rather have the system we have now than have a system where they just tell you to take an aspirin and call in the morning (UK).

And with them charging 10£ per doctor's visit, their ranking will drop on those coveted international rankings as one of the major points of ranking is how much cost is borne by the government.

ETA: Sorry for the all caps. But for real, I can provide literature that isn't the nonsensical pontification of ill-defined buzzwords that I'm sure you've gotten used to from the likes of Krugman and Chomsky. I'm getting sick of reading your non-Econ problem solving on here.

This is the statement a states rights individual would make.....
But we all know you are a big govt man

The healthcare system in the US is a system driven by corporate greed. Profits over patient well being. The escalating annual costs will never be reined in until that is resolved.

Smaller gov't will always destroy crony capitalism. That's really not up for debate.

And Obamacare does absolutely nothing to address this.

The easiest way to analyze a country's health care system to see how much they spend per capital and what is life expectancy. It's that's simple really. Canada and Norway are doing it cheaper and they live longer than us.

Even from another country I can hear your ponytail swishing across the top of your beanbag as you turn your head to see if the joint has made it back to you yet. What fricking nonsense.
