Dog Thread - Thinking About Adopting Soon
Posted on 7/5/14 at 2:09 pm

I'm thinking about adopting a dog. Ideally I'd like a border collie or Australian shepherd or a mix of the two.
A couple questions to the OT:
Have you adopted? If so from a rescue or a kill shelter?
What kind of dog did you adopt?
Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

I adopted a border collie from my vet. Thankfully, he's not hyper as hell. My next dog I'll get from her as well.

I adopted a Border Collie/ Australian Shep mix from Hammond pound the year after college.
I'm glad I waited until I got a yard for her to play. Very active dog. Getting old now
Pushing 12.

both of mine are from my local shelter and I actually volunteer and am on the board for the shelter too. We aren't a kill shelter and have no adoption fee, all dogs are spayed and neutered before they leave the shelter.
The big thing is finding a dog that is right for you. Go meet them and get them out of the kennel to see which fits your personality the best. Sounds dumb but if you don't want to go outside and walk or play with one, you don't need a hyperactive dog that requires a ton of exercise. If you want a dog just to hang around with, don't get a needy dog that needs a ton of attention. Find one that fits your personality the best.

When the vet sent a picture of Calvin with the caption "come get your dog" I told her no. I live in a small condo and work all the time so didn't think a border collie was doable.
Thankfully she insisted because she knew how laid back he was. Perfect dog for my lifestyle and he really enjoys when I take him to the barn or horse shows.
Otherwise, he thinks he's a lap dog.

Australian Shepherds and Border Collies are the best. I have a 4 year old female Aussie and she's everything you could ever want in a dog. I'm not sure how much luck you would have finding one available for adoption but if you do, go for it.

Yea, I've been doing that the last few weeks. Actually found a border collie that I liked at a shelter. Was going to adopt but he was walking with a limp. They took him to a specialist and a vet to see what was wrong and they couldn't find anything. I really liked him but I don't feel like adopting a dog that isn't healthy and could have major problems down the road. I'm not rushing in to anything.
I want a border collie to run with and take to the dog park and to take to the day care so it can herd the children around

Go to your local pound--if it's of any size you'll find lots of adoption-worthy dogs. We fished a beautiful female Shepherd mix out of the Orlando pound a few years ago and she's an awesome hound. Plus the local pounds usually provide the necessary shots, operations, etc., for much less than a vet. And the people at the pound have some idea of the dog's background, temperament, etc.
Start off the the pound.

Unless your vet is your friend. Then it's much cheaper
Most she adopts out are scheduled for euthanasia due to injuries at shelters. She scoops them up, fixes them, and gives them a second chance.

We always adopt from local humane society. Current dog is lab mix but definitely mostly lab. We got her young and she is getting pretty up in age now. She has been such a loving addition to our family. No regrets.

Please forward this upvote to your Vet if you don't mind.

Would you be interested in a female bluetick?
She's fixed and about 40 pounds. Sweet as hell. She's too much of a pet for me.

We have two dogs from the pound. Both are great and I think they are grateful, if that is possible. I will always get dogs from the pound.

I found a border collie in a shelter and adopted her. Some farmer had a litter and gave them up. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Dogs can make life much more enjoyable.
I personally think border collies are the best breeds, but I am biased.

As the others mentioned, check out the local animal shelters bit one thing also to check out is the various rescues. Do a Google search on rescue centers and check them out. Often times you will find obedient and leash trained animals. The adoptions fees are higher but you can find a very nice dog. I'm a rottweiler fan and I checked out the southern states rescue and they got some nice ones. Check out the rescues and go from there.
