Do you think the department would have issued a public statement and suspended the trooper if the speeder had been a regular joe?
I forgot about the undying fame surrounding Sam Montgomery right now.

Is there a YouTube link? I can't get it to play on mobile or on the article on desktop

Cop was a douche.
You Military?
Nah, NFL.
NFL? Alright you're under arrest.
There's not any reason somebody needs to spend the night in jail for fricking speeding. But Mr. Big Shot cop wanted to say he arrested an NFL player.
Clowney got pulled over by the South Carolina State Patrol for doing 110 in a 70. Three weeks later, 84 in a 55. Didn't get arrested.

What about his license plate, led the cop to ask if he was military? And then how did he just assume Sam was an NFL player?

Am I the only one that didn't think the cops action were that wild? Ppl get bullshite arrests all the time.
I would be pissed if that were me but imagine pulling someone over going 90 at 1 am. You have no idea what that person could do. I would say diffuse the situation, and then let Sam go once you realize everything is cool. Making the actual arrest was lame, but cuffs and making him step out wasn't THAT absurd. The internal review won't lead to anything and I bet the cop gets his compensation back that he is missing.

Just think- Sam could have avoided all this by not breaking the law.

Hell I don't think the cop did anything particularly wrong. Was probably scared shitless. Wasn't taking any chances with that big mofo.
He damn well should have been.

Once you realize he isn't drunk or has a dead body in the car, you write him a fricking ticket. Now he goes to lockup, has to wait for an arraignment, has his name smeared. All over a speeding ticket.

Just saying the cop doesn't know what to expect.
I guess I've been asked to step out of the car before a few times that I don't think it was weird. They already said he made a legal arrest so I don't see why he was suspended.
Yes it was bullshite - I just thought this was normal cop behavior.

If all depts did this police respect would skyrocket.

What a piece of shite. Glad Sam handled it the way he did.
And props to the department for suspending the officer.

I'm with you. Ever watched one of those videos of cops getting shot during a routine traffic stop? shite is crazy. I didn't think this cop crossed the line in that regard.
It was ridiculous for him to say, 'NFL?' get a yes, and then say, 'Alright, you're under arrest.' That will always be perceived as arresting him BECAUSE he's in the NFL.
The rest of it, he handled fine. Late night speeding stops, you never know what the hell you're going to get. I'd rather a cop be a little bit of a dick but careful than a nice guy who gets shot by some idiot on bath salts.
