Hello Whoneedssleep, do you have the FIN720 Syllabus or class text by chance? I see you mentioned FIN 710 was brutal how was 720?

Jazzy, not to discourage you but I recently finished 720 with Hsiesh and can confirm it was tough but not impossible, especially if you’re decent in excel. He encourages having a spreadsheet ready to plug and chug on the exams. But it’s a tough course. He doesn’t use a text. He has his own word document of the material which covers multiple topics per module. If I remember correctly, module 1 was 75 pages. I’d say it’s been my toughest course so far (I still have to take MADM 701 & 760 and ECON). My advice, if you’re looking for an elective, look elsewhere. If you’re a finance major and really want to learn about finance, take it but don’t double up.

Thanks!

Anyone understand the difference in content between FIN710 and FIN720? Hsieh tends to teach both.

I don't have the syllabus. But from what I remember the course laid out roughly as follows:
- Weekly post and response to classmates
- Test every other week ( I think) over the book
- Marketing analysis paper every 2-3 weeks based on a specific company and 3 things they could change moving forward.

Wasn't too bad. Papers were interesting enough to research and write. Tests require you to read the chapters in the book to do well.

Nichole Phillips - only after the fact did I check out her reviews on Rate My Professor - she has one of the lowest ratings of any LSUS professor. Almost all are atrocious and the class was a nightmare. I checked our her LinkedIn profile and she still lists that she's on the faculty of Winston Salem State University, so I don't know if she's in residence there and works online for LSUS, or vice versa, but she was difficult to say the least. Grading was incomprehensible. One week I'd get dinged for something and then when I'd conform to what was requested I'd get dinged for the change. It made no sense. It was also difficult to ever know what would be on the tests. For example, we might read 75 pages of text, plus outside reading, videos, etc., and study two dozen scholars/theorists who each proposed some hypothesis or theory. And each of those theories might have 5 or 7 or 15 components. Then on the test, instead of asking what the theory was about, we'd get questions such as "How many components of xx theory did this expert offer?" It was timely and frustrating. I made an A, but with lots of effort. My final assignment clocked in at more than 5,000 words. Yep. That's right. It was insane.

Hi,

I’m looking into LSUS online MBA program. I’m also looking into Louisiana Lafayette’s program. Does anyone have any concerns of an LSUS/Louisiana Tech merger? I know it recently was pushed off, and they have tried and failed before. I’m from out of state and I’m sure I don’t have all the details. I apologize ahead of time if I am misinformed. Also does anyone have a recommendation on a good first class to take? I have been out of school for eight years. I would start the 2nd spring semester.

Hi, the "merger" seems to be a non-issue. I think there was one State Legislature pushing the issue and he's failed twice. Not sure what his motive is, but he can't seem to gain traction. And even if it did ever pass, LA Tech is a good school too. The Lafayette program, to me, appeared inferior because of the additional time it would take to complete. If i remember right, it was 11 courses and a minimum of 13 months to complete. I think the price was competitive though. I actually reached out to them before I decided on LSUS. What drove me to LSUS was that the ULL rep failed to meet our appointment. We were scheduled for a 9:30 call, I cleared my schedule, and no call came. So that made my decision easier. The downside to LSUS that I'm finding is thier marketing lately makes them look like a diploma mill. If you search LSUS, the first thing you see is "our online MBA" and "we have an 80% acceptance rate, apply today." That's a bit of a concern for me.

QUOTE: I’m looking into LSUS online MBA program. I’m also looking into Louisiana Lafayette’s program

I am a transfer student from the ULL MBA program, and I’m glad I switched. The ULL program is a good program, but the online accelerated edition is fairly new, maybe 3 years, and they are still working out the kinks. Cost-wise it is comparable to LSUS but will more than likely take longer to complete. When I was attending ULL, the required completed hours were anywhere from 33 to 39 (that may have since changed), not including foundation classes. Foundation classes at ULL are mandatory for all non-business undergrads. I do not have a business undergrad and entered the LSUS MBA lacking two of the foundation classes. But since they are not mandatory at LSUS, I did not take them and I had no issues passing the core class.

I found the workload at ULL to be a tad overwhelming. The material itself was not difficult, but the amount of work assigned in a 7 wk. period was massive. I think ULL wants their program to be challenging which ultimately translates to a heavy workload – most classes were no less than 20 hrs a week of work, with the average being 25-30 hrs. Another negative is that ULL does not offer any course flexibility. There are no electives to choose from at ULL - you basically take the courses on the program sheet, in their respective order, with little deviation and no choices.

Another thing to consider is that ULL only has 1 summer session – LSUS has 2. ULL also uses Examity as their proctoring service, which is not included in the cost of tuition. If I remember correctly, tests are an additional $15-20 per hour and $7.50 for each additional half-hour... average test is 1 ½ hrs.

SIDENOTE: I completed 5 classes at ULL before switching, but LSUS only accepted 2 – they will only accept 6 transfer hours from another school and do not accept foundation classes, which means that I will have to repeat 1 class because my credits exceeded the 6 hrs. and the foundation rule, but I believe the switch was worth it.…something to consider if you decide to start somewhere else then transfer.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

They are graduate level courses - of course they are time consuming. IMO this pairing is the most difficult since both courses are writing heavy with the professors requiring multiple discussion posts weekly and 3-5 page papers. My advice would be to split these courses and pair with less writing intense courses.

Yes, I had Erin McLaughlin for MADM 760.
My academic coach said the same thing about taking 2 classes & was surprised when I completed all 8 of them with B's or better They just say that because they are aware that a lot of people can not handle it with family, work, etc.
No problem at all. You can do this! :)

I will be starting soon and would like to complete the program in 10 months. To do that I will obviously need to take 2 classes at a time. Preferably 1 time consuming/hard and 1 not so time consuming/hard. Does anyone have any pairings that they thought worked well together? Right now I am looking at ACCT 701 and MADM 760.

Im down to my last pair of classes in the project management concentration -- my five easiest courses were:

ISDS 715
ISDS 720
ISDS 730
ACCT 701
ECON 705

Of course YMMV, but having a PM background made the electives a cake walk, and I didn't think the workload for ACCT and ECON were insurmountable. The MADM & MKT courses tend to be writing heavy -- depending on the instructor. My advice would be to search this forum, join the Facebook group (LINK ) and review syllabus as much as possible before committing. For example, ISDS 705 has a professor with a 25 page final paper with a recorded group presentation, and another professor with only 3 open note tests...good luck out there!

Dr. Mary Lind is the professor with the 25-page paper and group presentation, and while those assignments are as horrific as they sound, I found her lack of organization even worse. Do NOT take her for ISDS 705. You will absolutely regret it.
