What can I get that's a smart phone that doesn't cost $600? Weren't people talking about Nexus or something?

If you're ready to switch to Android without a subsidized upgrade then the Nexus 5 is probably as good as it gets at $349 LINK / You also might consider refurbs if you just want something to get you to your next upgrade. Have you looked into repair costs? It might be better than buying another phone.

The Moto G is a great phone. You can get a 16gb new for $200. If you want to go super cheap for a phone that runs well the Lumia 520 is around $60.

I just got a moto g and I love it. $200 unlocked no contract. Although not as fast as my gs4, I find it smoother and think its a great way to first experience android coming from iOS.

I'm pretty sure most of the repair places cell used phones as well. I bought one in the past and it was a whole lot cheaper than going through my provider.

Blackberry z10 is cheap on ebay.

The screen is super easy to fix. I fixed a 5c for my wife and the screen was destroyed. I think it was 115 or so off of eBay.
