Did the USA get outplayed?

seems Ghana was constantly threatening to score while we rarely were. After the first goal did we shift into a more defensive mode or was Ghana just that much better at controlling the ball and at making shots at the goal? (even though they were missing, it wasn't by much).

They are a good team and we did not play up to our potential. However, we still won. Great teams find a way to win even when they are not playing well.

We played extremely defensive. But I think if our midfield would of completed 3 passes in a row more often we would of looked alot better

Ghana was most definitely on the attack for 80% of the game.

Ghana's chance creation improved as the game went on, but most of their shots were from beyond the 18. They are a super athletic, technically sound team. I'm glad we got a win from this.

Yes, without a doubt. Our passing was very poor.
frick it, 3 points.

We finished chances that we had and won the match which is the bottom line but yeah I'd agree that it was against the run of play and Ghana's midfield dominated the match.

we were dangerous early ona few counterattacks. we conceded possession to them a lot more than we would have otherwise because of the 1-0 lead

We gave up possession too easily. Bradley looked especially bad. Too much bunker ball after the early goal.

No. All part of the game plan.
Good plan coach!

I think the early goal changed things, and we would have had more of the ball if that hadn't have happened.
The Ghana game in the 2010 World Cup was a lot more even when it comes to possession and chance creation, but it probably would have gone about the same way if we had scored early then.
But we were very sloppy. Unusually sloppy. It didn't need to be that much one way traffic.

Who made the best out of their opportunities, however limited they may have been?

Bottom Line is: We were playing from ahead for 99% of the game. Ghana created more half-chances than us and controlled possession but we scored early and answered Ghana's goal quickly. The rest of the game, we played really defensively. I don't think we were particularly outplayed.

We were absolutely outplayed.
I think this happened for 2 reasons. A) After the goal, Ghana felt immediate pressure to score. They became more aggressive and would have dominated possession against most teams, including those better than us.
B) Using a defensive oriented line-up, we had tons of guys who aren't great with the ball on their feet. Combined with Bradley's bad game, we ended up booting the ball a lot and doing a lot of kick and run. With Jozy going out due to injury, we had tons of problems executing a feasible kick and run strategy, since Aron and Dempsey are not guys who hold up play against physical defenders.

We knocked one in, then played extremely defensive and let Ghana bring it at us. We chose that over continuing to attack because Ghana's MO is in the counter when they can fly and really exploit you with their speed. They talked about that happening in the pregamed stuff on ESPN as well. It wasn't pretty but I think it was better to hunker down and let Ghana bring us their best built up attack down the entire field rather than give one or worse two up in a quick counter.
However it was very reassuring how when we needed to break out of that defensive mode, we were able to and knock another in.

We were terrible getting the ball out of the midfield.
But we grinded it out nutted up on D and got picked up by Brooks. We won't play a team like Ghana again in this group.
Ghana has been the focus since the draw and that hurdle had been crossed.

Ghana was a physically superior team that were young and prone to lapses is in attention. I think we played to our strength.

Keeping up with Ghana's speed in the midfield was a major problem for us. I think we will have better possessions against Portugal and Germany.
And Ghana's goal was a big mistake by Howard. Can't leave the inside post open like that. You close it out make them shoot outside. But he knows that and I wouldn't want anyone else there right now. I doubt he makes that mistake again. Plus it was off a hug breakdown on the right side.
