Spinoff: Ways to earn extra money
Posted on 6/16/14 at 11:17 am

I'm fresh out of college and make a pretty meager salary. A year from now I should be making a more comfortable wage but it's hard to make ends meet. An extra $50-100 a week would be great
I have some ideas like mowing grass, fixing cell phone screens or reflipping items(don't have a lot of experience here).
What are some other good ways I can make a few extra bucks? I already work 50 hrs/ week

"Keep it sexy or you won't eat". That's all I got.

One idea i had was getting a cell phone repair kit and fixing damaged phones that people sold on craiglist for cheap(found a galaxy S2 for $25 with a cracked screen) and selling them on ebay
You'd be shocked at how low some people sell good things because they don't have the patience to fix them or want a newer item and need cash

In college I would "flip" a bunch of shite. Estate sales, craigslist, etc. Find something cheap and then resell it.
Some Saturdays it was a waste of time, sometimes I made a few hundred bucks.

Call up a staffing agency and see if they have any work you could do on weekends.
I've pulled doubles on sat/sun plus a shift on fridays for a warehouse filling orders. Pay is kinda shite but its an extra 2k a month.

If you don't mind slaving away on the weekends, work in a machine shop. It'll be just basic work - cutting up material, cleaning machines etc but the pay would work for you. Probably around 10-12/hr.

I did this. I was a fast typist so I was a "Kelly Girl" for awhile. Yes, that was the job tible back then even though I'm a guy.
Tutoring kids worked out well too.

This isn't really appropriate for you at this point in your life, but keep it in mind for later -
My wife and I are owner-occupants of a 4-unit multi family. If you get a decent place in a good location for a fair price, you can do very well for yourself. How much income you bring in is largely dependent on how much work you're willing to do yourself. We fix/maintain pretty much everything within reason, thus the house pays for itself

Sort of like a duplex? I've been looking around for something like that in the Fall

You'd probably consider what we own to be a large townhouse, but a duplex would work just as well if those are available in your area.
As you may be aware, the real benefit to multi families is in the tax deductions - you can write off expenses such as property taxes, interest, insurance, repairs, maintenance, etc. to the tune of the % of your house being used for "the business." For us, this means 75%. And you still get the normal mortgage interest deduction for the portion you don't write off for "the business."

Are those 50 hours mainly during the week?
Tutoring - since you are right out of school, maybe you have some connections?
Sports officiating - it's seasonal, but you can make that working a few hours a weekend.
As was said in the other thread, food delivery.
Janitorial work - clean buildings at night, etc

Go buy "new with tags" baby clothes at Once Upon A Child then sell them at the online boutiques on Facebook. You would be amazed at how much those moms will pay you for a pair of sandals you bought for $3.

Check with local radio stations.
I did radio work as a side job years ago...a studio engineer will make decent money....and your training will take about 30 minutes.
With high school and college football coming up, Friday and Saturday nights will have openings.
The job is easy...listen for the breaks, play the ads, bring the show back on the air, record the ad plays on the log.
If you are reliable, have an ounce of brains and dont smoke pot on the job, you can make 75 minimum for 3.5 hours of work.

I'm actually in very similar situation.
I found an extra part-time job, shopping & delivering grocery's for people. It's about $13 an hour, sometimes more.
Pretty decent gig for after work and on the weekends.

I've been doing mystery shops...I go do them during my lunch break from work...not a ton of money in it but I just use that money to keep my truck full of gas.
