staying at the Crowne Plaza
Looking forward to spending the morning by the pool, walking to the tailgates then heading back to the room and showering before the game.
Seriously bad move here place is a dump ,pool area is deplorable . ..... But then again you've been told that 10 times and chose to ignore. Good luck

Do not stay at the Crowne Plaza. Place is a dump.

I'm not staying at the Crowne Plaza, but am staying in that area.

Instead of reading through this entire thread can someone tell me the best place to stay that isn't far from the stadium and close to the best bars?

Brand new JW Marriott on Main ST in Downtown. Looks really nice and on the rail line.

Just don't stay southwest of the stadium.
Disagree. If you only want to use the hotel for a couple of hours, why pay for a whole day?

Just a place to crash maybe? For me will be arriving late afternoon Sat. and need a close place to change maybe take a swim and head to game, won't be vacationing in there1 LOL
BTW, arriving around 4:30 on SW from NO and rent car; will the traffic be impassable to get near stadium or take back way?
TIA

What about the Houston Marriot at the Medical Center? Pretty decent?

It's fine. Walking distance of light rail. About a mile and a half from Rice Village if you wanted to hoof it that way.

BamaHater.
I just checked my reservation.... I am at the Crown Plaza Houston River Oaks..
Is this the Crowne you are saying is a dump...or are you talking about the Crowne Plaza Reliant Park area?
Thanks...appreciate the info!

Sounds like a solid plan. Sign us up for four spots on that deal. I would anticipate Badger fans and Tiger fans will be a lot alike

quote:I was talking about the Crown Plaza Reliant. The River Oaks one is on the SW Freeway and almost Kirby in a nice part of Houston. The hotel looks ok from the pics I googled but be aware it is next to the freeway. Still pretty close to Reliant. I don't think it was a bad choice. Not one of the best in Houston by far but not bad either.

Any idea if they're taking reservations yet? I have one at Icon, but would prefer to move it here...oh, by the way, it's right by the Flying Saucer.

I live across the street from that JW Marriott (and in the same building as Flying Saucer). I would be absolutely shocked if it's done in time. The first three floors are still completely bare and down to the studs.

Icon is a better place to stay for restaurants and bars.

Restaurants, maybe. Bars, no.

Better than Midtown for bars? No. Better than every other part of downtown, yes.
These are the bars that are located within a two block radius from Icon (two or three of these aren't open yet): Hearsay, La Carafe, Okra, Batanga, Honeymooner, Captain Foxheart, Goro and Gun, Pastry War, Barringer, El Big Bad, Warren's, and two others I can't remember the name of.
The only bars near JW Marriott are Flying Saucer, Springbok, and Sunny's. Plus, JW is on Rusk, and there's going to be rail construction. It's been going on for two years, and I see no end in sight.
Trust me - I've lived at Main and Capitol for the last three years - for bars downtown, the 300 block of Main is where it's at.

I'll be staying at Sam Houston hotel. Same vicinity and just as nice. Believe the rate is lower also.

Agreed, but I'm a huge Saucer fan and would like it stay in a newly opened JW. Icon is very nice, can't lose either way.
