Eminem hit it big in 1998. The cd came out in early 99 but slim shady was all over the radio in late 98.
Plus you had Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Biggie, Puff Daddy before he went crazy changing his name, Mase, Master P, Bone Thugs, and Ginuwine. Never underestimate Ginuwine. Pony is one of the best songs ever regardless of Genre.
And in other music, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band hit it big. Hootie was the original Nickelback where there was huge popularity then a backlash. And the spice girls. Ahh, the lovely spice girls.
Movies were great. The Austin Powers movie got their start. And that is when special effects took off. Summer blockbusters were not some campy horror flick like in the 80s with Friday XIII and Freddie. Terminator movies were big.
And let's not forget the rise of the WCW/WWF. Monday nights were great.

Cheers was more of an 80's show.

No worse than it is now, considering America is more celebrity-obsessed than ever. At least in the 90s, pop stars came and went and people grew up.

Actually she was produced in the 70's and her popularity is from the 80's.

Eat a bag of dicks. The 90's were the shite.

The 80's were the worst. From top to bottom. music, vehicles, fashion, movies etc.
And I was born in the 80's so no bias here.

I've probably watched more 80s movies in the last year than all other years combined. iPod is mostly 80s music too

The 1980s and 90s were the pinnacle of US, and thus human, civilization.

"I think much of what you assign to the 1990s happened in the 2000s"
THIS. The 90s weren't great but they were infinitely better than the 2000s. Most of what the OP describes only describes the very end of the 90s. The 2000s were an awful awful decade in both pop culture and life in general. The only really bad thing I can say about the 90s is that it was when the political culture of the country moved WAY to the left which has led to the liberal hell the mainstream media gas turned into. Political correctness just started to take off in the 90s and got much worse since 2000.
Sadly, we'l likely never again experience the great pop culture and sense of fun and possibility of the 80s.
