Staph outbreaks. Scabies outbreaks. A footbridge over raw sewage. A guard with TB allowed to continue working. No blood sugar measurements for diabetics. Stroke victim left on a cell floor for days. A blind prisoner being tricked into signing his own "Do Not Resuscitate" form.

The report includes tales of infected face wounds, amputated toes and feet, gangrenous testicles treated only with ice. They cite the story of a prisoner who complained after surgery that he was bleeding from his rectum. Staff twice gave him new pants after bled through his own, but gave him no treatment other than an antacid. He also died, according to today's report.
How much should tax payers pay to keep felons healthy when they are poison to society. How many rights should a prisoner have? I agree with not tending to basic health concerns but prison isn't supposed to be a walk in the park.
What is your stance on this?

It's disgusting. Hinds County jails are under investigation for not protecting inmates from violence and sexual assault. The state of our prisons and jails is inhumane in many parts of the southeast.

Considering the high number of non-violent offenders that we lock up... I would say that we should provide for basic sanitation and healthcare. Then again... Alabama is kind of a 3rd world country.

there are just 15.2 doctors and 12.4 dentists for 25,000 in-house inmates. And there are 4.7 full-time psychiatrists and only 5.6 psychologists for the entire system.
Uhhh....I can see how having amputees performing medical procedures could be a problem

It's not like Louisiana is that much better. Without New Orleans, Louisiana would be Mississippi West

Prison is for punishment and rehabilitation for 95% of prisoners. This does no good to increase the chances of them being productive when they get out, and its just inhumane.

So what. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Prison ain't easy. Don't do something that will get you there, and you have nothing at all to worry about.
Mostly, I'm being sarcastic. But a little bit not. I mean, we should be humane about it, but who gives a rip about a footbridge over a sewer? Really? Don't jump in it and you'll be ok. But yeah, if you had a stroke, tey shouldn't leave you laying in your cell, and if one of your nads is gangrenous, they probably ought to have a look at it.

I don't care. Stay out of trouble and you won't have to worry about this happening to you. These people made a choice to do what they did to be in there.

How about not breaking the law and getting sent to jail or prison?

Jail is a place to serve a certain amount of time for illegal activities. When someone becomes a ward of the state, it is the states responsibility to care for their safety and health. Being beaten, raped, or infected is not part of sentence. The frick them attitude I can certainly understand, but is not what any country valuing life does. I'm not advocating a spa and fun in the sun, but most prisoners are not the Manson or Dahmer types. They will get out and go back to family and society having served their sentence without more burdens imposed on them from abuses within the system than the problems that they imposed on themselves as a result of their actions.

Your response completely dodges the issue.

Yeah, I heard they were pretty tough in that state.
