I'm sure if I asked, they'd shove a few hundred dollars in my mouth and tell me to GTFO.
So you want your schools goal athletically to be to make money, not win ranked as high as possible?

If I'm the president/chancellor of a university and someone walks into a room with a check with $800k and one with $11 million, I'm taking the 11 million (which will shoot up to around ~20 after the next 1-2 years). Pumping that into upgrading facilities and student athlete amenities in order to attract better athletes, and taking steps to win ranked as high as possible.
If you don't make that decision, please avoid making any further decisions in life.

Not sure if you've realized this, but more money attracts better coaches and provides for better facilities to show recruits.
It's no coincidence that soon after establishing the RCAF, the quality of head coach candidates for both the football and men's basketball programs rose. We've also been able to keep Hud, so far, from packing his bags and moving out of town for the first hint of a new job.
It may not sound like a big deal for a BCS school, but for us to be able to raise enough private donations to layer his contract with around $1 million between salary and incentives was HUGE for us.

Better example would have been West Virginia, they got hammered on the field and in the pocketbook.
