He runs a solid program, and has dominated the Southland for a good bit of time. Every time I've seen Sam Houston play, they have reminded me of a pro team with how they act and approach the game. After watching them I couldn't stop thinking about how much I would have wanted to play for him. This is a great hire for Tulane.

"I'd really like to thank the Sam Houston State community, university and athletic department, especially the baseball coaches, players and support staff," said Pierce. "My wife Susan and I are very excited to be coming to Tulane University to become a part of the Tulane family. I'd like to thank Dr. Scott Cowen and athletic director Rick Dickson for giving us this opportunity to come to New Orleans to be a part of this great institution. I know we have a lot to do in the next few days to secure and communicate to recruits and returning players that good times are ahead of us. Our intent is to come in and win now, and we are not only going to win on the playing field, but also in the community and in the classroom. I would like to finish my statement with one thing: Roll Wave."

This is an extremely solid hire for Tulane. Their fans should be exstatic.

Wow, Maestri is the highest paid coach in the Southland?

I don't know if I'm more shocked that Pierce will be making 2x the salary of the highest paid coach in the Southland or that the highest paid coach in the Southland's record was 2-28. That means, at best, UNO got swept 8 conference weekends this year, and at worst, got swept 9.

I hope he keeps the slugger bird unis

That tweet said that SHSU offered him twice Maestri's salary (which is officially 100k, but about 155K all sources I believe).
I'd guess he's making 400-450 at Tulane.

Interested to see who his assistants will be.
If he keeps Jake Gautreau (back to back top 25-30 recruiting classes) as recruiting coordinator it could lead to one hell of a combo. Heard Pierce is a solid recruiter but even more so heard is one hell of a baseball coach.

And he's basically building the program from scratch, again.

and I'd wager he will succeed!

Maestri might, but the wisdom of paying him the highest salary in the conference, with their scarce resources, is dubious, imo. Other than the last guy, they've been able to get good coaches there.
And maybe he's more than overcoming it with fundraising.

I'd wager that he won't. They showed pretty much no improvement this year.

gotta give him time to get his players in... and get the Chalmation out
by the time they're ready to win, Blake Dean might be the HC, then he'll be Mainieri's successor

True, but that's a tough job for anyone right now. An 80 yr old man probably isn't going to have the necessary energy to get it done.
