I'm not bashing, I'm just curious about the service because I'm usually up for work at 4am - hell, if I can make a few extra bucks around town a few hours earlier I may just sign up for it.

The latter, though I'm sure it is based on availability. I think one of the times we saw it we couldn't figure out what it was for. I imagine from time to time they're just short on drivers on a happening-but-not-huge night and it goes to surge.

But the surge varies. It may be 1.5 some night when everyone is trying to get to a huge concert, and 3x on NYE.

Absolutely not. Never.

Maybe, but I doubt it would be 3x surge.

They do the surge pricing to attract more drivers to work that night. They pick their own schedules so none would work on New Years Eve unless they got paid a lot more.

Tons of people don't go to Bayou Country Superfest or LSU football games.

called last night at 1:40am and the cab was there within minutes. just called the regular number

It's the middle of the summer.

Even a "good" yellow cab experience in BR involves not knowing how long it'll take to get picked up, not being able to make sure you get a vehicle big enough for your whole party, and having to hope the cab driver knows the address he's picking you up from, and having to carry around cash.

Uber involves no phone call, gives you the time to pick-up down to the minute, uses GPS to pick you up, and pays automatically so there is no exchange of money at the time of the transaction.

Even if yellow cab in BR was adequate (and it's far from) Uber would still be miles and miles better. Yellow cab is just short-sighted. What they ought to do is work with Uber to become the UberTaxi operator for BR. But I'm sure they won't.

I've only had it surging one night which was a big LSU block party in Dallas…there were literally thousands of people there and it took me 2 minutes to get a cab…I submitted it, and the cabbie called me immediately to tell me what he's driving and he had me raise my arm so he could see me….

I will GLADLY pay 1.5x the price to get a ride home in 2 minutes versus trying to find a cab when 500 people are doing the same thin

and this happens for A LOT of events…it took me an hour to get a cab home during Super Bowl weekend in the FQ…mardi gras is almost impossible to get a cab in a timely fashion….did anyone see the Cab line Saturday night after Jazzfest ??

I know several people that do this on weeknights to earn extra cash.

So cab drivers aren't strangers?

I live in nyc and have used uber quite a bit. Some points for people that want to know more:

- uber gets background checks, all personal info of drivers
- if drivers get too many bad reviews, they're dropped from uber
- no cash ever needed. It's billed to the credit card on your account. The driver turns on the meter from the app on HIS phone (provided by uber).
- as others have pointed out, you can view all uber cars nearby, and where your car is when it's on its way
- you may have heard about price gouging. This happens because uber guarantees that you can get a car with its service. So when demand is high, rates go up to keep the service available. Conversely, when demand is really low, rates go down quite a bit. This is probably only a problem for big cities. NYC had a big price gouging problem with uber after Sandy.
- You can easily get uber credits by getting friends to sign up. We've gotten over $100 so far in free rides.
- haven't had to use it yet, but heard the customer service is outstanding
- all cars I've been in have been new looking and very clean, all driver's nice as well.
- most driver's have been gypsy cab or yellow cab drivers for years and years. They're not just some stranger trying it out. They can do this on their own with their own cars and get paid more than with cab companies.

I thought about doing it myself…and not even to make money…I just think it would be fun to pick up a group of drunks every now & then…we were bullshitting our driver on Tuesday…I asked him how often he has to work and he said whenever the frick he wants to…there are no minimum hours a week you would have to do it…where I live Uptown I could just be chillin at the house bored as shite, then turn my Uber phone on and go pick up some drunks…plus I'd get extra for having a premium vehicle

What does that have to do with anything? Please dont say anything LSU related because college kids arent using cabs.

I agree with the first part. They should tell you the wait time upfront. If you ask them, they can usually give you a time frame though.

A vehicle big enough? Sorry if you have more than 4 people with you, you should let them know beforehand. Dont expect them to know you have 7 people with you and them send you 1 cab.

Most, if not all, the cab drivers in BR have Ipads in their cars now with GPS.

would be a good idea

yep.

But they rarely surge prices. Its not like a regular weekend night would have higher prices.

Funny, I just Ubered to go to a friend's house so my car is at mine tonight/tomorrow. 7 minutes away, his name is Gary and he drives a Subaru Forrester. I'm watching him on my GPS map approach.

Later OTers

I'v had it tell me there were no regular sized vehicles available and if I wanted to wait I could, but I could get an UberSUV now for the bump up in price. One click and I was able to get the ride immediately instead of waiting because I felt like paying a little more for it.

The app doing little things like that automatically is pretty awesome IMO.

obviously I'm doing that. I'm talking about saying "hey I have 6 can I make sure I get a van?" I've been told that isn't possible by Yellow before.

And college kids use cabs ALL THE TIME in the SEC towns with good service. It's just part of going out and is how you plan your night. If the service was adequate, then they'd do it here too. It's just so unreliable that yes, college kids in BR are impatient.

After using my first Uber in DC, I never bothered with cabs again. Great service for a little higher premium. Totally worth not dealing with the BS of waiting/hailing/arguing with cab drivers.

This. If you haven't used Uber it is great. It costs a few bucks more but you get a cleaner ride and driver.

it doesn't even really cost a few bucks more…my 2 cab rides tuesday were 6.50 and 7.50…you can't go anywhere with a yellow cab for less than 10 bucks after you tip them
