Recs for a fly rod setup

We are taking our vacation to exuma, bahamas in July. My husband doesn't really fly fish, but apparently it's the thing to do there. I would like to give him whatever it is he needs for our trip for Father's Day. Can the OB please make some suggestions? The fish look like they are about the size of a speckled trout. Whatever I buy I think he needs to be able to break it down for air travel. Thanks!

Doesn't really fly fish? Why not rent when you get there? I'd rather catch a Tarpon on someone elses rod.

The island is very very tiny and remote. There is barely a grocery store. I would think rod rentals unlikely.

9ft 8 or 9 wt rod that is a 4pc (portability on the airplane). You need the heavier rod to battle the Bahamian wind. Get a saltwater reel that has a strong drag (cork) that holds ample backing. Get a bonefish taper line and some bonefish flies. You will be fishing for mostly bonefish, possible permit and tarpon. Ebay or Craigslist is a good source for lightly used gear that someone else may have used and will sell on the cheap. Buying new will cost a fortune and may not be feasible if you hardly ever fly fish.
I use a Sage Xi2 and Abel 3N, both used from ebay for under $400 combined.

This might be a more expensive request than you realize...

I agree. A quality, used setup will cost close to $500. That's a ton for a short trip for someone who doesn't fly fish. That won't be the easiest place to learn when the wind gets going.
I don't want to get into the price of a guide service!

Here is a combo that might work as a starter kit...
Redington Path 990-4 Saltwater Fly Rod Outfit (9'0", 9wt, 4pc) $190

Thanks for the information. I had no idea what to expect. If he really wants it he'll buy it himself. I was just trying to be a good wife and cover his Father's Day gift at the same time. He picked up something at academy that was 200 for just the rod and we weren't sure if it was junk or not. So he put it back and said he'd check out Cabela's. I'll check around on eBay. Of course the homeowner for the rental house wants to push the guides...

Academy sells St. Croix Imperial rods at that price. . . if that was it, then definitely not junk.
If he's just gonna try his luck fly fishing and doesn't want to be in the hole an exorbitant amount of money, it's hard to beat Cabelas 3forks/Prestige combos or RLS+ combo.
Those two reels only go up to an 8wt, but you could buy an extra spool and put a 9wt line on it if you think the 8wt isn't enough. I can't speak for the Prestige reel's drag, as I only have a 5wt, but I have 3 RLS+ reels (3wt, 7wt and 8wt) and have caught numerous bull reds up to 18lbs on the 8wt so can attest to it's disc drag being up to the task.

I normally get an additional 35% of coupon every Sunday for the entire order at Sierra Trading Post. Remind me and I will forward the discount. wickowick@gmail

The 8wt Prestige is a great little set up for the price...especially for a beginner. I had that set up for a bit, given to me as a gift to coax me into fly fishing. It did what it was supposed to.

Use a local guide that will supply the proper tackle. Please.
