Tulane Baseball coaching search

Sounds like we could know something by the end of this week. Jake Gautreau and Mark Kingston are expected to interview tomorrow and Miss St. pitching coach Butch Thompson will interview when available. Mark Kingston seems to be the favorite.

Did Jeff Willis get an interview?

I can't say for sure, but I don't think he did.

My son got this in a text from a current player whom he graduated high school with.
"We were told our AD will offer the position to the Eastern Illinois head coach. He used to be an assistant here."
I believe he is referring to Mark Kingston from Illinois St who was an assistant on the 2005 CWS team. That would be a big hire IMO. Great recruiter.

Jeff Willis not getting even a token interview is garbage. Im played for him so my opinion might not be fair and balanced

One of the hardest parts of the Tulane job right now is dealing with the high tuition, academic standards and few scholarships. I don't know his background has Willis dealt with that before LSUE?
They don't have the UC any more, but they did get The School of Continuing Studies. I believe it's pretty similar, but I'm not sure what the differences are.

Hopefully we can get Gautreau in Ruston.

They can't put athletes in it full time. They are supposedly working on more "athletics friendly majors".
Tuition is the problem, but even then, I've heard that TU has done some things to help. But you have to sift through "coach speak", which I learned long ago is necessary at Tulane...unsuccessful or declining coaches love their excuses and alibis. Some fans are close to various coaches, they report what they heard from coaches, and all of a sudden, the fault is with the University or with whomever.
From my view, tuition is probably an issue (but overstated) and Coach Jones didn't adjust well to losing his class after Katrina, nor to losing his 2008 class to the baseball draft, nor to the revised NCAA recruiting and scholarship rules.

What is the academic difference between Tulane and Stanford? They seem to always have competitive baseball teams, as well as a competitive football team. I also doubt it is cheap to attend there. So how is that a valid excuse for Tulane?

The tuition cost is a particular challenge at Tulane because Tulane doesn’t have the endowment as Rice, another prominent Conference USA, high-academic private institution. Rice lists its 2012 endowment as over $4 billion on its website. Tulane’s endowment is $1.2 billion, Dickson said. The endowment subsidizes costs for every student.
“(Tulane's endowment is) not as robust as a Stanford, Vanderbilt or Rice and that puts us in with a grouping of those that are struggling with this,” Dickson said.
Some private schools have more academic aid packaging that can minimize the 11.7 scholarship factor all college baseball programs face.

Sounds like TU alums need to pony up...

@Pg_Reinhardt: South Florida not Tulane now appears more likely to steal baseball coach Mark Kingston from Illinois State.
