Deftones certainly spawned out of it, but they grew and evolved.

Yep, Adrenaline had a bunch of rap influence, but even then it was different than the rest of the other bands cashing in on that influence IMO.

Their new stuff is so dramatically different now, and watching them change so much over the years has been pretty cool.

Anyway, a lot of my feelings can be summed up in this article:

This article is great, and well worth the read! His review of the Korn show was hilarious. I'm looking forward now to reading the other 9 parts of the series.

Agreed, except for Korn. They have done some Nu metal stuff, but they've been all over the place. I think they just generally enjoy doing all types of metal.

Early Staind for sure. Their more recent stuff, probably not.

I'd add POD to that list.

System of a Down is definitely not Nu metal. RATM I wouldn't consider it either, though obviously Nu metal got a lot of inspiration from Rage.

What about Sevendust, Sevendust912?

Someone described nu-metal as a cross between thrash and rap. Basically metal with a good rhythm. Sevendust fits that category.

Does Incubus count as nu-metal?

Not even close. They were barely even metal to begin with.

Yeah I wouldn't think so either. And that makes me glad. Although they seem to share a particular aesthetic with that sort music.

System of a Down isn't really nu metal.

Agreed. Not at all. It
is in same category of sound as Tool.

Static X got lumped in with nu metal because of timing. They were more industrial.

Agree again. They were more like Skinny Puppy and Ministry. The lead singer would sometimes have moments of Nu-rock style, but overall they were anything but. The first batch of cd's released for Wisconsin Death Trip even said "Ministry meets White Zombie".

When I think Nu Metal, I think POD, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. Those are bands I am content never hearing ever again.

Korn's debut album was very impressive. POD is one of the worst "bands" I have ever heard and yes, I bought the cd to prove it (I have outgrown them). Limp Bizkit...Jesus did I envy them, because they were so overhyped and so rehased, it made me think that my friends and I could be them. Durst knew the right people (KOrn) and before you know it, a very average band was making headlines. Bizkit is one of the worst of that group.

POD was my favorite of the nu-metal. They were the most consistent and longest lasting of all of them and didn't sell out until like....their 7th album. Fundamental Elements, Brown, Satellite, Payable on Death, Testify, Snuff the Punk....Angels and Serpents wasn't THAT bad....

I hate to use the word "sellout" because every band does it. Still, POD was about as candy-coated as they come. They were groomed to be just like any of their predecessors. NOTHING made them original. They stayed true to being "factory made." They can Southtown you all they want...they aren't telling a new story via NU metal.

quote:

Linkin Park is easily the worst of the nu metal now. They are trying so hard to be what they were and they're sucking at it bad.

Completely agree, here, though. They are part of the Carson Daley teen crap and the beginning of MTV playing less and less videos. Their image was bought by 15 year olds who thought an Asian guy rapping over a hard guitar was cool. Hardly.

I have seen many metal and nu metal bands. The Deftones are somewhere in between because most of their songs are not "rap rock"...they out on a helluva show. I saw Coal Chamber, Godsmack, Staind, and The Used (among others)...all of which were very average at best. Coal Chamber put on the best show of them all. The energy to the shows is very simple. I also saw Incubus at the Varsity back in '99 and they were decent, but by no means did they capture me. Their showmanship is more energetic than Godsmack or Staind, for instance.

METAL>NU Metal.

Not really Nu Metal IMO. Maybe their first record, but they have 10 studio albums, the other 9 aren't really that close.

I own the debut Sevendust album and saw them on tour back in '98 with Coal Chamber and Human Waste Project. I see no Nu Metal in them whatsoever -- just kick arse rock. The opening track, "Black" is just bad arse. The second track, "Bitch" has a tiny nu Rock element to it. "Terminator" has some catchy rhymimg before the chorus going on, but it's distinctive unlike most of the nu-metal bands who all wanted to become the next Rage Against the Machine. If the lead singer, LeJean, wasn't black, no one would even mention Sevendust as nu-metal.

Sevendust is hard, southern, soulful rock with some elements to metal ala Pantera and some grunge like Tad and the Melvins. There is no link between Sevendust and bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. There are no turntables at their live shows (back in the day anyway) and there is no rapping.

Was Kid Rocks earlier shite considered numetal? The radio station I listened to back in the day always had his tracks in rotation with Limp, Korn, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park.

A bunch of my slightly younger friends were and still are huge Sevendust fans. No matter how much of their stuff I was forced to listen to (or concerts they dragged me too in the early 00's), I never found them to be anything but the most bland, soul-less, non-innovative hard rock that I could imagine.

I dig Korn's first few albums, System of a Down's first few albums, and most of Deftones discography.

I enjoyed everything SOAD did. Most of Deftones albums were classic.

Korn is really a two album pony.
