They put the beta in beta. Ok, now that we got that joke out of the way, damn these things are hideous.

It was inspiring to start with a blank sheet of paper and ask, “What should be different about this kind of vehicle?” We started with the most important thing: safety. They have sensors that remove blind spots, and they can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections. And we’ve capped the speed of these first vehicles at 25 mph. On the inside, we’ve designed for learning, not luxury, so we’re light on creature comforts, but we’ll have two seats (with seatbelts), a space for passengers’ belongings, buttons to start and stop, and a screen that shows the route—and that’s about it.

seriously, where am i supposed to put my wet bar in this thing? What about taking mrs. colorchangin down to the lake canoodling in the back seat?

This is where they will make their money, marketing the sensors, software and control systems to vehicle manufacturers for retro-fitting them to older cars so people can have their luxury as well.

The only thing that'll be grinning wider than that car appears to be is the first person to sue Google after it runs into them.

Say goodbye to bad arse muscle cars. I can see this being like a public service thing like buses.

You know what? When(IF) Google manages to make one of these contraptions successfully drive itself--ALL BY ITSELF--from Newark to Queens during a snow storm at night, THEN I'll be impressed.

Question I had today while navigating through a confusing construction zone: WTF is a google car going to do when confronted with an "out of the box" scenario like that? I'm far from a luddite, and I'm all for this, but I think it's going to be a long time before these things can be turned loose in anything other than a very rigid road infrastructure.

While it is ugly, I'd say it's better looking than what we thought the future would look like. The Johnny Cab from Total Recall:

I'm too drunk (high/horny/invested in my video game/busy bouncing around to music) to care.

Yeah, that's going to work. Who drives 25 mph and manages to get anywhere? Would be good for going to the convenience store 4 blocks away for a 6-pack but that's about it.

What happens when it has a blowout or breakdown? Does it repair itself?

I'll wait till they make one of these:

As much as I love the idea of electric/driverless cars, I cannot wrap my head around the fact that all but a couple of these types of cars (The ones made by Tesla) are fricking terrible to look at. Why can't we have these companies just stick to their normal brand styling that already works for every other car in their lineup?

The Nissan Leaf may be the ugliest car since the Aztek
