What was Mainieri's reasoning for not using Broussard in the ninth?

That guy loves him some "hunches". And this one worked wonderfully.

I was confused too, but McCune was dealing so whatevs.

I'm guessing he just felt like McCune was looking good so he left him in. But after the lead off walk, I was surprised he didn't make a move.
Broussard hasn't had much work during the win streak.

I was okay with this, the relief pitchers were cruising. Each time one had a great inning and got removed I would hope the next guy was on fire (The umpire had an insanely tight strike zone).

Wanted to let the senior close out the championship game

I thought for sure he would go to the pen after that walk, but I'm glad McCune got to close out an SEC title in his senior year.

I think Mainieir didn't use Beoussard because he knew Kendall Rogers was in attendance. Broussard's two worst outings of the year came with Rogers in attendance.

I dont think we've had an established closer all season.
16 saves and Broussard only has half of them, McCune has 5

This is one of those threads that would have been titled "What was Mainieri's reasoning for taking out McCune who was dealing" if Broussard had been brought in (and especially if Broussard had been brought in and blown the lead).
The Rantards always want to leave the hot hand in the game on the mound and today they got their wish.

It was obvious in the 8th the stage was not too big for McCune. He wanted that ball. Sure maybe after the walk but McCune has that split finger that induces ground balls. I think PM thought he might get a dp ball. And he was right.

I was apprehensive about putting McCune in, but he does pitch in the zone, and Florida hadn't hit a ball hard all day. He's does pitch to contact, and that park, on that day, he was a decent call. Broussard wasn't a guarantee to be dialed in, so the safer call, esp after the previous inning was to stick with the Cune..

He felt confident in what Broussard could do. He wanted to expose McCune to this type of championship situations in the event it occurs during the NCAA tournament. A Bertman move.

Cune was dealing. We all know he's had his ups and downs as well so this was a very good opportunity to build some confidence with him. One more confident arm coming out of the pen over the next few weeks is a good thing.

Broussard has one blown save all year. McCune has been far more up and down.

He said in his press conference that McCune gave him a look as if "if you come out here, I'm not giving you the ball". Mainieri felt McCune had his stuff. Glad for the young man to get to finish it off.

You could see it. Especially after he got the last out in the 8th. Kid was pumped up

Thanks, that was what I was looking for. I was certain that he was asked about it post game. Just glad to hear that there is no soreness or anything for Broussard.

I was surprised because McCune had a great 8th, and you would have thought he wanted to make sure McCune went into the regional sky high in confidence.
It ended up working out great though.

He said on the news he had Broussard ready and was on the top step but after the double play he looked at McCune and they just looked at each other and he left him in because he wasn't sure McCune would give him the ball
