Mainieri said he made it to the top step of the dugout and planned to bring in closer Joe Broussard but stopped when he interpreted the look from McCune as saying “stay where you are.” McCune got Bader to ground out to first to end the game.

“I just thought he was throwing the ball amazing, as good as I’ve ever seen him throw it,” Mainieri said.

The Advocate piece on the decision.

Oddly, that comment is after two outs in the ninth. Why did he stick with the Coon to start the ninth instead of bringing in Broussard like we have done for most of the last two months?

McCune pitched a great 8th. Coaches often stupidly replace a hot pitcher just to stick with his formula. I told my wife after 8, CPM should stay with McCune unless he gets in trouble, or until he has two outs. That last just to give Broussard a game-condition tune up.

I thought that Broussard may have fallen on CPM's "list", after the aTm series...but since then, there haven't been very many save situations since then, either...

If I'm not mistaken, that's his only blown save. You can't expect a closer to be 100%. He's been really big for us this year.
