setting aside the entitlement emanating from this screed, the actual arguments are mostly pretty good
i for one feel no ounce of sympathy for budget-strapped universities, having worked in one (LSU) as an undergrad and having seen the stupid minor shite they waste money on. with dozens of departments pissing money away like they do it's no wonder they're in trouble

frick em all. I used to be a self entitled little shite myself. One time at an interview for a great job, I even went so far as to blame a previous employer for my lack of success in the field I was in at the time. Boy did I get a well deserved arse chewing/life lesson from the interviewer.
I walked out without the job, embarrassed as hell and better for it.

I'm assuming this guy can scratch off "professor" as an employment possibility now.
Posted on 5/22/14 at 8:53 am to HornsLife
Maybe if the fellow had gotten a marketable degree like accounting or engineering, he wouldn't be unemployed and $40K in debt. I laugh at these rubes who get worthless degrees then whine when they can't get a job.

Where do they use that amount of money? Yeah, a new school building can be expensive, but they spread that cost out over the course of the project, and it becomes completely affordable for a school making a billion a year. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how a school goes in the red when they are taking in $200 million to a billion a year
I understand that they are always gonna get overcharged for everything they buy, but that's a hell of a lot of new projectors

What I would tell this kid:
80% of a university's cost is people.
Printing costs are a spit in the ocean for a university's budget. You can't fault a college for asking for money. They are supposed to ask for money. You can say yes or no.
If you want to demand accountability for spending and suggest where the cutting can begin, direct your anger at administrative costs. You can cut people and run a tighter ship, but just realize that your university will not be "bigger and better" than before for every successive generation.
If you and your university community are okay with that, go for it. But I expect that neither is okay with that. Everyone wants their alma mater to grow by leaps and bounds with every new generation, but they sweep the bloat that comes with it under the rug. Someone has to step up and say you can cut my university first. So far, no one has.

I think Optometry is the new way to go.

Well for one they pay administrators and professors more than the industry leaders(who are actually contributing to the economy) in the field that they are teaching.

I can't wait to see the first optometrist advertise his surgical skills on TV.

Man, that sounds awkward.
It happened 10 years ago and I'm heating up and getting redfaced right now thinking about it. I had to interview with two other partners after him too. I was a stuttering, sweaty mess.
In other words, it was awesome. I should write them a thank you note for giving me the kick in the arse that I may have gotten much later or never at all without them.

and that is why you are currently employed and the dipshit in the OP isn't.
Those dudes would likely read your letter and offer you a job.

While I'm all for universities shutting the frick up on nagging recent grads for money, this guy just seems like a loser. It's been 2 years since you've gotten your Masters and you still can't find a job? Really? Maybe you should start looking more inward at the problem (which is you) instead of blaming everyone else for your problems. This is many of the members of my generation personified.

I agree with your overall point, but here he's responding to the University's request for a donation.

This guy sounds a lot like a fellow I know; he's convinced he can't get a job because people just don't understand his brilliance.
