use the weber lighter cubes or some other type of firestarter

i use mine in conjunction with a chimney starter and I can get coals as hot as i want them

That's what I'm doing...though I don't bother with a chimney starter. A flat starter square works just fine, nestled directly into the coals.

I thought that a durable device might give me a faster start than a parrafin/wood block.

I've got one of these and it's amazing. It's probably not that brand. I don't think it cost that much.

Go ahead and pull the trigger, got my LBGE for Christmas and wish I had done years ago. You will not be disappointed.

Kamado Joe makes a cheaper version

I've cooked on both Kamado Joe and BGE. IMO BGE holds temps for smoking better and longer. The hardware is better on the BGE as well. I own a Kamado, so I am not just saying that. My Kamado is about 5 years old, so they might have improved the design.

The Primo has always looked like the way to go if I were to do it all over again. The usable cooking area is just too good to pass up.

I have a Looft lighter and will never use anything else. You can control where and how much fire you want to start. It's quick, easy and pretty cool too. Just my 2 cents.

Hardware on new KJ is much better today than 5 years ago.

I use my looft lighter for all kinds of things. It's not just for Kamado's. The Bison is the one to get if they ever release it. It's basically a looft lighter that runs on butane so its portable. Great for camping. Pretty sure you can get a free looft lighter this wk end at Shoppers Choice when you buy a charcoal grill over $500

Martini, i burned my gasket up a few years ago as well. If you call them they will send you a nomex gasket for free. Just get some 3M super 77 spray adhesive and you are good to go. Haven't had any gasket problems since putting it on way back when.

To answer you question, I love my egg for steaks and ribs but don't use it near enough as I should.

I went to their website and it let me add to cart and I stopped at the point to enter payment info. Are you saying they aren't shipping it yet? Because it never mentioned that to me during the whole process. I'll be pissed if I pay $100 for a lighter and it takes forever to get.
