No star treatments. Everyone has to work their asses of if we are to be competitive.

Jurgen is trying to get every last bit out of Landon for this tournament. He's making him work and I think Landon realizes that. I fully expect Jurgen to say that Landon has looked great in training and is looking like the player we have come to know.
Needless to say I'm being optimistic but I'm also using history as the best indicator as to what we can expect. History has suggested that Landon shows out for the World Cup so I fully expect him to do whatever it takes to live up to that expectation.
All of this.

You've gone too far, you monster.

I am one of the few in saying that I like Jurgen's methods. Sure, they seemed ridiculous at first, but he's clear as frick with the fact that EVERYONE has to push hard for a place in the squad and that you can't rest on your laurels. That's how it should be in any team. Donovan is not above that. That said, Jurgen knows the quality Donovan brings and will include him in the 23, if not in the 11.
Agreed. Good post.

No, they aren't 32 or 33 whichever it is.
I am Donovan's biggest fan, I think he is by far out best ever player, but I watched his last few LA Galaxy games and he has been shyt.
At 32 you can't afford to get out of shape.
At 26 or 28 you can go to the month long camp in January and stay in shape.Besides, I doubt anyone ovrrseas wanted Besler or Zussi in a starting role.
Donovan's passing is world class, but ypu have to be able to out pace others for the passing to come into affect.

I think this quote from Howard yesterday means a lot.
I also remember Baby Bradley saying something similar when Landy rejoined the A-Team for the Costa Rica qualifier.
I have a feeling that if Jurgen leaves him off, some high ranking players won't be too happy. I'm not saying they will revolt or anything like that, but we all know a good WC squad is about chemistry as much as talent and if a player that a lot of other players respect is left off, the chemistry may take a hit.

“For me it’s very easy, if Landon is on the field, he’s [one of] our top one or two players,” he said prior to Monday’s training session. “That’s just my opinion. Whether it means anything or not, I don’t know. Landon is humble. But for me, he’s easily one of our best players and he strikes fear into opponents.

That's a big reason that Landon won't get left off. But, also, when we are tied up 1-1 70 minutes into a match and Jozy has been running his arse off and wearing down our opponents CB's.... Landon comes on, and with his experience and vision, All it takes is one great run or pass by him and he's free or someone else is.

That Howard quote is part of the reason JK is hesitant about starting Landon IMO. Landon is such a big figure in US Soccer, even in the minds of the other players, that the game is almost surely going to go through him if he's on the field.
That's great if he's the Landon of whom we are all fanboys, but if he's out of shape and form, we might be better off without him even with a lesser player in his spot if that lesser player is able to mesh better with the whole.
I think it comes down to how much you believe the team overall has progressed. There was a time when we definitely needed Landon in the 11 whether or not he was in form. I don't know anymore, and I know JK believes we've progressed past that point.

Since you guys seem to have missed this stat the first time: In Donovan's 12 appearances for the USMNT in 2013-14, he has 8 goals and 9 assists. Just watch the highlights from the Gold Cup semis if you need evidence of how he has played in a US shirt recently. How is his starting spot even a question? Who on the bench has the potential to put up those kinds of stats right now?

Cakes will be on the final 23. This is a motivation play by Jurgy.

Doing that against Honduras' B squad and against Ghana, Portugal and Germany are two completely different things.
Plus, Donovan is in poor form and looks a lot less quick than he used to.
He's still on the 23, but I don't know if he starts a game unless his fitness is better than it was a month ago.
On a separate front from earlier in this thread - I think Jurgen gets too much flak for talking out of both sides of his head. Yes, form, PT etc - all of that matters a great deal.
But you also have to build a team with different options. Brek got called in because he was one of the only guys, if not the only guy, that filled that role. Now, Green or Davis will fill that same role.
So, when everything is even, those things can really come into play. But things aren't always even, and sometimes you still need to build a squad and fulfill each need while keeping those things in mind.

I will find a way to slap Jurgen's face if he does.

I don't think that I'd put too much stock in a handful of games where he was already openly talking about the World Cup. He hasn't played poorly for the entire season.

The flak he takes over this is silly.

Exactly. It's not CONCACAF competition, and if he starts in Brazil, it will be as part of a very different 11 than was at the Gold Cup.
It's not that Donovan can't perform against Germany, it's that the team may not be well served by Donovan being the focal point as he was in the Gold Cup.
Look at the first half of the Mexico friendly when Donovan was on the bench. US Soccer's website has gone retarded, so I can't see the old results anymore, but IIRC Donovan wasn't on the field against Italy, Germany, or B&H when we played and beat those teams. The point being that, with or without Donovan, this team can play awesome soccer against World Cup quality opponents.
And the question is whether Donovan has really found and solidified his place as part of our starting attack and whether his very large presence will be able to fit into and add to that group instead of throwing it off. If he was in 2010 form, there's no question you just make it work. In 2014, it's just not a given.

yup. bradley is 1 and landon is 2. dempsey is the most overrated player we have IMO, but that can be another thread.
to the guy that thinks it might be a bad thing to run play through landon, that just baffles me. it will go through bradley and hopefully landon as well and that's exactly what we should want.
i also don't quite understand what games some of you guys are watching where landon isn't a definite starter for this team. im sure someone will be like, "diskerud had a great year in norway" or some shite like that. give me a fricking break.

quote:4-2-3-1. Not saying it's going to happen, but I can see it considering everyone's current form. Especially after seeing Jurgen tell Dempsey he needs to help out on defense more and be less selfish.

I would imagine that, for most people, it's not really about Juergen's hypocrisy. He has tried to be some hardass, master motivator for players who have never really had a problem showing up to a tournament, playing their hearts out, and achieving more than they probably should have.

Alitdore and Bacon up top in a 4-2-3-1. I see.
