Wedge Antilles was asked back for Ep. VII, declined; "Would have bored me"

IGN
Probably one of the more endearing characters from the Star Wars universe that never really got any significant screen time. I totally get his decision.
I'd say by this time, Wedge would be a high commander in whatever they have going on (wouldn't still be the rebellion, would it?), and they could probably give him a pretty significant role. But more than likely they'd have a shot of him flying an X-wing, have him spot off a line or two, and be done with it.

While a large portion of the original gang is back for Star Wars: Episode VII -- including Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, C3PO and R2-D2 -- we now have confirmation that ace Rebellion pilot Wedge Antilles will not be back for the new installment.
According to TheCourier, actor Denis Lawson (who played Wedge in all three original trilogy films), said he chose not to appear in Episode VII when asked, saying, “I’m not going to do that…They asked me but it just would have bored me.”

Lawson had indicated a few months ago that he’d only like to return to the role if it was bigger than it was in the original films. Lawson did return, however, in a voice-over role for the 2001 video game Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. Lawson’s Wedge was the lead character in the game, so we can understand (based on Lawson’s demands) why he’d want to reprise the role.
Well, Wedge was one of the rare fighter pilots to survive three films, so we can only assume he also survived 30 years after Return of the Jedi (exploring the galaxy in his X-Wing, perhaps). Lawson just so happens to be the uncle of Star Wars prequels star Ewan McGregor.

Well, he's a pretty useless character in the movies, basically a glorified extra.
Translated: he would have only been paid 75 dollars for standing around a set all day.

Pretty much defines the Star Wars universe.

Such a Wedge thing to say.

Yes. Abrams should have centered the entire movie Around basically an extra. Lol

Did anybody say that? But this "extra" actually had a name, said on screen, and was in all 3 original films. I think calling him an extra is really shortchanging him.

Did not know this. That's pretty cool

His character hit its stride in the EU. No doubt.

IIRC in the EU he became an admiral and commanded one of the new republic fleets. So yeah, he moved on from Rogue Squadron. I believe RS was still attached the the fleet he commanded.
I could be way off with all this, it's been like 15+ years since I read those books.

You aren't.
Zahn featured Wedge alot in the Thrawn trilogy, and the fans really responded. Wedge became a pretty major character in the EU.
I mean, for a guy that survived Death Star I, Hoth, Death Star II, plus all the other engagements in between, he's gotta be a hell of a pilot.
I know, I'm a nerd.

Wedge Antilles is a great name

I literally have no idea who this guy is.
So basically most people don't care about him, he would've only been good for a shout out to Star Wars mega fans, and he clearly didn't want to do that

Meh, moreso EU fans. Like I said, in the EU, he's one of the bigger main characters.

They should recast the role. Lawson himself was the second Wedge.
I think the original is now deceased.

IMDB credits Lawson as Red 2 (Wedge) in Ep. IV.

Probably found out Abrams was blowing him up in the first sixty seconds to put his stamp on the start of his trilogy.

Speaking of minor characters, Ackbar and Lobot need to return.

I was hoping Biggs would be back.
Oooohh, too soon?
