Are we positive that we can't sign a free agent in the days between Gordon's contract expiring and AD's contract extension?
quote:

116. What are the important CBA-related dates each season?

The following dates are referenced in the CBA, starting with July 1, which is the first day of the salary cap year. Any deadline which falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday is extended to the next business day.

July 1 Salary cap year begins
July moratorium begins (see question number 103)
Free agents become free (GORDON)
Unrenounced free agents, scale amounts for first round picks playing outside the NBA, and roster charges are applied to team salary (see question number 14).
Poison Pill provision expires (see question number 89)
Teams may apply for a Disabled Player exception (see question number 25)
Free agents can be renounced (see question number 41)
Players acquired via secondary waiver claims through the Amnesty provision can be traded (see question number 68)

July 8-11 (date varies by year) July moratorium ends (see question number 103)
Salary cap adjusts (see question number 13)
Salaries adjust
Exceptions arise (see question number 25)
Teams can sign free agents and make trades
Starting 2012, amnesty waiver period begins (lasting seven days -- see question number 68)
Contracts can be renegotiated (see question number 60)
Contracts can be extended (see questions number 59)

So, could we possibly sign a free agent in the morning and extend AD in the same afternoon? Or will Davis' contract have to be extended at the earliest time allowed?

I don't know honestly, it's not really clear. That's actually something BSS should ask Larry Coon when they have him on the podcast later this summer, so Aced if you're lurking, let your friend MM know.

The extension will be agreed to during the previous season. It would seem like cap chicanery for the team to be able to treat his cap space like the qualifying offer rather than the already agreed to extension.

I believe to give the 5 year extension to Davis, we would have to do it before the previous season starts, similar to washington and John Wall
