Father In Law is a 'retired' Seal.
He does the reunions and such often. Just after the Maersk Alabama incident the Captain of the Maersk spoke at one of their reunions. FIL got him to sign/personalize a Navy Seal cap for my son.
He is apparently part of a group of Seals that take great pride in outing the fakes. Some of them travel around the country to 'discuss' their relevance with the fakers. I've never asked him how they know when someone is fake. I doubt there's a list but maybe it's some distinction of training ecetera that Seals realize whom is and whom isn't.
Doesn't talk about it much however he did tell me a story of meeting a 'attractive lady' at a reunion once that was making a movie about Seals. Didn't remember her name. Turned out it was Demi Moore.

There is a list of people who go through buds and SQT. At that website, they can figure it out for you as soon as you ask

Didn't bother reading the whole thread but that's probably about right.

Friend's dad was one. Passed away after Christmas.
He told his son before he passed that they used to set prisoners free in the woods and let the Seals loose to kill them with their bare hands while remaining as undetected as possible.

So much for the theory about no hand to hand combat skills.

yeah i def remember the early years of MMA when those guys would get worked in fights
They get hand-to-hand training but not the MMA training the UFC guys get (unless they've added that in the last few years). They are taught not to stand there and go toe-to-toe but to target your soft/vulnerable target areas to kill you quickly if it comes to that. Those skills are not allowed in sanctioned MMA-style fights. If the MMA fighter was accosting the SEAL in a back alley threatening the SEAL's life, I think the "winner" might be different.

If General Patton would'a had five hundred thousand SEAL's he would'a been emperor of the world.

A guy who is a business acqiutance of mine has a son who is a Seal. I went to his house to pick him up for work and he introduced his son, telling me that his son was home on leave having just completed his initial Seal training and was officially a Seal. This guy was in his early 20s, about 5 ft 7 or 8, weighing about 150 or 160. Looked like he was in great shape but not what I would call physically imposing.
After we left his house, I commented to Norman that his son didn't look like what I thoought of as a Seal. Norman said his son told him that in training a lot of the big, tall, muscular guys washed out. For the most part it was guys like him or a little bigger that made it. Norman said that he had doubts that his son would make it, but was not overly suprised. He said his son has always been a scrappy guy.

I'm not a Seal, but, I heard a joke once about a Penguin who blew a seal.

The father of a guy I used to work with was with the OSS in WWII. His job was hunting Nazi agents in Brazil, but he said their biggest adversary was the FBI. J. Edgar kept trying to horn in on the action.

How many SEALS do we have in here? 30?

This thread makes me wonder just how secretive, elite, and covert SEALs are. Everyone seems to personally know 7 of them, and many can kick their asses, hand to hand.
Posted on 5/3/14 at 12:34 pm to Tony Tanti
Of the two I only know 1 personally and that's only because he's been friends with my brother forever. He's told me that when people ask what he does, he tells them he's a zookeeper.

Seals and other special ops teams are highly trained for their intended purpose, but don't bet any money on them being a sure thing in any x-treme sport or adventure race. Seal teams have never won or finished in the top of any eco challenge race and have been beaten by teams from a Women's magazine, software engineers, and a team of playboy bunnys, on more than one occasion they have become lost and called for rescue.
"Navy Seals Rescued from Ocean Kayaking Event
Tuesday, August 19, 1997 -- 4pm AUS
Team Odyssey was rescued by helicopter this afternoon off the far north Queensland coast, near Fitzroy Island on the final 50 mile sea kayaking leg.
The event's rescue helicopter crew saved all four members of the team, after they radioed race management for assistance. They were winched from the sea and returned to the Eco-Challenge medical center in Bramston Beach (Camp 3).
Team members, Nate Smith and Joe Bell of Coronado, California, and Christoper Haggerty of Rockville, Maryland are all members of the elite US Navy Seals."
