Another 12 years a slave thread...

Hoy did Lupita win an academy for that movie? She acted well, but was a fairly minor character all things considered. I felt like I kept waiting for her part...

She won that award before anyone even saw the movie

I feel that the movie won awards not necessarily on merit, but on perception.

Glad I'm not the only one

I don't even know who Lupita is, and the only really memorable performance in the movie was the actor who played Solomon Northup, as well as the first slave owner whose moral ambivalence struck a cord.
The film was without question the best film made in the last two years. Definitely deserving of the best picture.

What exactly made it so stellar?

I thought it was an amazing film. I thought everyone did an stellar job acting, and I feel Lupita and the other cast members gave us a very small, intimate, and un-sensationalized story. Much as it pains me to say it, my boy Benedict Cumberbatch was probably the weakest performance IMO. The success of the film was how understated and everday things appeared, no grand flailing(no pun intended) of the actors or overwrought sentimentalism from the director.

Loved the movie so much that I immediately downloaded the book to my Kindle after leaving the theater.
I've got to say that I can't recall a movie ever being truer to its source material.

What did you dislike so much about it?

I did the opposite. I read it twice in the lead up to the movie coming out.
I thought it was pretty true to the material, although one or two of the changes left me really puzzled.
It's an outrage that the book has languished mostly in obscurity over the years - particularly for Louisiana school children who should have been doing field trips to the various sites, lo these many years.

I suppose my prejudice towards the book is partly to play with my nonchalance at the movie. I've always felt the book was overrated (not to say it wasn't good) and that there were better books out there on the subject matter (although these don't have as compelling a story and are more an amalgam of the multitudes of experiences in the antebellum south.)

N'yongo was great in the movie, and the movie itself was great. Both were very worthy of their Oscars IMO.

Fantastic movie. Seriously, it is a great movie worthy of re-watching. The Roll, Jordan, Roll scene was incredible.
The only performance I didn't really care for was Brad Pitt's minor role.

I agree it's a really good movie, not overdone like it could've been, but outside of her soap speech, she was merely a passing character. I just imagined based on the award, she would've had a more prominent role...

That's the one that was voted People magazine's "most beautiful woman", despite the fact that she resembles Arsenio Hall, right?

So who gets the award? Who would you give it to? I see controversy if this was best actress but this was best supporting actress. Also I am sure she had more screen time than Anthony Hopkins did in Silence of the Lambs.

I'm still making my way through last years films, so to crown another would be moot, and to be honest, I can't remember the other nominees. However, I'd like to believe that in their supporting roles, they saw more screen time and had more lines than what I just watched. Again, not taking anything away from her performance, it was just a limited role.

You do realize it was for a supporting role, right? There have been Oscars won for supporting roles that had far less screen time.

That's such predictable nonsense on this fricking site that it's not really worth responding to, but, nonetheless, you're really full of shite.

I'm sure they all look alike to you.
She's actually a pretty young woman.
