Over the past few weeks I've been having pain around my knee, from the inside of my knee to the outside, that shoots up my leg to my hip after I run. I've been icing my knee down after every run now which helps a little.
Does anyone know what could be causing this and what can I do to alleviate the pain.
TIA![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

This happened to me a few years ago when i started running after a 10 year hiatus. I went to the dr., got fitted for some shoes, and rested.

Could be IT band.
First, go get a massage, toughen up, bare the pain and tell them you need IT band work. It's going to hurt and it will suck, and it will help.
Go to you tube and look up IT band stretches. Also, strengthening your core and hip flexors/stabilizers/ etc will take some of the pressure off the IT bands.
Google IT band / hip stretches, then IT band / hip exercises.
If it is IT band, usually it gets better with time, stretching and strength.
And lastly, buy a foam roller and roll after every run and try to for a couple of minutes every day. Even if just a few passes directly on the IT band and upper legs.

Does this sound right?

The best way to tell if you have ITBS is to bend your knee at a 45-degree angle. If you have an IT band problem, you'll feel pain on the outside of the knee.

Here is some stuff on foam rolling (disclaimer...I didn't even watch it but it will give you an idea of what to look for and where to start)

Foam roll it. It will hurt like hell when you do it, but it's worth it.

You came to the right place. I'm an orthopedic surgeon and have been a runner for 25+ years.
It's AIDS. Prayers sent.

If it's your IT band you more than likely wouldn't have medial knee pain, pain radiates.. But more than likely not medially in this case. IT band runs perpendicular to your knee. Outside and down your knee, well not so much knee, but where you hinge at. That's the IT area. If your having medial knee pain you could have just tweaked something. REST and ice that bitch for 20 min a pop several times a day and take anti inflammatorys per directions. Don't run for a couple weeks. If it's better after that then your good, if not then see an ortho. I'm not an ortho, but I worked for an ortho group for 6 years.

Since we're both Cajuns bros, I'll piggyback your thread.
The arches of my feet have been killing me lately after doing any run. Are gel inserts the way to go?
