Stealing medical services.....

I read a post on my Facebook timeline tonight that deeply troubled me. Let me summarize:
Girl had some major back surgery a couple months ago.
Tonight she posts this:
Received 3 bills in from the surgery that totaled $8,850, I have no idea I'm going to pay for this, I don't even have a dollar in my checking account.
Then goes on to gripe about how she would have gone to a different hospital, was cared for by mostly residents, and complained it took several hours to get her staples taken out. If I had to guess the girl had obamacare.
Then the part that really gets scary, where people start responding on how to get out of the bill.
One person brags they once paid $100 on a $10,000 bill.
Another told the girl to pay $10/month, and hope at the end of the year the hospital writes the remainder off.
Do these people walk into Ruths Chris, order steak and then proceed to skip the check when they see it's an expensive meal? I guess the doctors should work out of the kindness of their hearts. It's not that she doesn't have the money to pay, but what people are urging her to do is basically stealing. Of course the tax payer get stuck with the bill at the end. The parasites we have in this country make me sick.

back surgery isn't typically an emergency thing. why the frick did she get back surgery when she couldn't afford it?

I think she may have been in some sort of accident, but even then I don't think it was an emergency. I really don't this person really that well, and it's taken every responsible bone in my body to not just call bullshite on her post.

This is EXACTLY what many people believe. They think we're supposed to be completely benevolent, altruistic and have no concern whatsoever for our well-being or that of our families. We are merely there to serve the public when they get sick and should feel bad for expecting to be compensated for our efforts.

My grandfather would NOT go to the doctor, even though we qualified for Medicare. Didn't want to take what he couldn't pay for. Today... people believe they are entitled to their neighbor's money.
It is indeed sickening. And there is NO legislative solution that will fix healthcare. Until we go back to my grandfather's attitude--not taking what we cannot pay for, the costs will only go up for those of us that pay our bills, until we too, refuse to pay. Then no one will have healthcare.

I think failure to pay a debt should be treated like what it is...STEALING. People obtain my services and often use of my materials at a cost to me. The expectation and promise of payment it made. They then leave without paying and make no attempts. How is this different from shop lifting?

Because doctors expecting to get paid are evil.

You are all about to be salaried federal workers....
....that's the logical end of current thought and events.
Just do your fricking job and stop bitching. Where is your compassion for your fellow man? Why do you deserve more than 75 grand or so a year?
Didn't you get into this to help people?

Bet they still make me pay off my loans, too.

I guess politicians expect doctors to follow their economic model. Spend millions to get elected to a job paying $200k just for the right to be a public servant. Why shouldn't people shell out thousands of dollars and countless hours in school so they can help their fellow man for $50k/year?

With interest. You know..because you are a rich doctor.

Good. I've earned my fortune. Now I'm ready to sit around and do jack shite for a decent little spending money check and pad my gov't retirement.

F$%k no. Boats and hoes. That's the real answer. Just most are too pussified to admit it.

I'm really pissed about this, if I didn't have co-workers on my fb I would unleash holy hell on these folks.

In all honesty, you poor frickers have no life. Not in school and especially not after.
God bless all of you. I mean that.

Oh, I forgot to mention this girl (who is an adult) can somehow scrounge up enough money to go on a cruise every year.(not that cruises are expensive, but still some discretionary funds)

It's not THAT bad. We just want a fair market. And to quit being the scapegoat for escalating cost. We don't dictate reimbursement. The insurances and gov't does. They set the rules and we play by them. Notice they never mention how much insurance and hospital executives make. Or pharmacy owners. Or owners of home health agencies or medical supply companies. The big money in health care isn't going to the docs. Hell, it's illegal for us to profit from our own success. Our reimbursement is a small fraction of total healthcare cost. They can cut us 50% and you wouldn't see a change in cost, but you damn sure would in quality.

Yeah, its not all bad. Med school is hard and residency is a bitch, but we still have lives. Most doctors (aka not neurosurgeons) who actually enjoy what they do have awesome lives in their late-30s, 40s and 50s.
I just hope theres enough left of the field for me to enjoy my career 20 years from now
