I know this should be on the outdoor board but I was hoping it would get more hits here. last year I (and a group of friends) went on the buffalo in northern Arkansas. had a good time but this year we are going to buy our own kayaks. Anyone know of any good rivers in the south east ?

Where are you located, and how far are you willing to drive?

It's back in north Arkansas.....but the Spring River

I've never left there without some part of me being bloody. Mainly my shins and legs. You can stay in Hardy.

It should be really flowing right now with all the rain everyone has been getting.

Okatoma river in Hattiesburg is pretty cool. There are a couple of outfitters who can bring you upstream. There's actually a few rapids (not much, but the only place in miss-La with them). Camp out on point bars.

Cossatot or little Missouri River would be good for beginners. I wouldn't attempt the Cossatot falls if you are a beginner. I am an experienced kayaker and it has eaten my lunch on several occasions. Lots of camping and if you get the river at 3.5 ft or higher you can shuttle no problem. There will be lots of people up there.

Here is a link to some of the rivers/creeks in arkansas. It will have gauges, photos, and river info that will be very helpful for beginners.

You should join up with the Bayou Haystackers. They do a lot of kayaking/canoeing/camping.

Eglin airforce base reserve has a lot of great spots. You need a permit though ($10.00 per year).
