What are the cinematic stereotypes that really make you cringe?

1. The Roid Raiging General - Think Avatar. I'm sure there are some overly aggressive military figures in real life, but Hollywood needs to take a fvcking chill pill on these archetypes. These blood-thirsty meatheads they conjure up are completely unrealistic and sometimes I find them borderline insulting to some of the real leaders we have in our military.

2. The Jobless Sailor - I always find it funny (usually in rom coms) when there's a character who doesn't have a job but just lives and works on his sailboat. He doesn't have any money yet he somehow managed to score a $400K boat and can afford a slip in a Marina overlooking the downtown harbor. Ok.

Any others?

I am sick of the comic relief, oversexed sister of any female protagonist.

the stupid arse police chief characters like dennis leary from amazing spiderman (every character in that movie is a stereotype)

the inept black partner, i.e. rush hour

lawyers cracking shitty one liners like in Suits

Not that I don't dig movies that this happens in (Oliver Platt/Executive Decision being exhibit A) but the "I didn't sign up for this" braniac nerd who finds his inner badass has been played relentless.

The cop who "doesn't play by the rules." I honestly think a lot of our problems with law enforcement stem from these guys watching too many of those movies growing up. The rules are there for a reason, and it's mostly to protect citizens from out of control assholes.

The branches of law enforcement battling each other.

"This is MY crime scene!"

"Not anymore!"

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I hate it when characters can live in a 2k sqft apartment in Manhattan while working some crap job.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of Colonels that are EXACTLY like the Colonel in Avatar.

I'd say a worse stereotype is the stupid officer that has to be bailed out by the "brilliant Soldier".

The wise old black man is getting worn out.

A few examples

Scatman Crothers - The Shining
Laurence Fishburn - The Matrix
Morgan Freeman - Everything He Does
Denzel Washington - Book of Eli
Bill Cobbs - Get Low (good under the radar flick btw)
Ron Glass - Firefly

This pretty much goes back to Uncle Remus days. I actually like the trope for the most part. But it has gotten to be overused by lazy filmmakers.

The way that the South is portrayed by Hollywood and especially TV is sickening. I recently wrote a research paper on it.

Bad guys empty a whole clip and can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Good guy shoots the bad guys with one bullet each.

Someone always has to fall every fricken time!
