Since it received a large amount of crowdfunding, it better shite gold to meet expectations.

Serious understatement there.
They are at 42.4 million

The website
If you do the math that is just under $100 per person.
It is only because of Chris Roberts being the man behind it.

If it delivers on even half of it's promises/potential I think it could be an extremely cool space sim. I'm definitely keeping an eye on it.

That's right. I was trying to think of the guy behind it, but was too lazy to google it. It's been a while since I've really seen any news about it. I'm not actively following it though.

Just wanted to bump this thread up. The first Alpha module to contain any game play, the "Arena Commander" has been released. It's basically a game within the Star Citizen game, but it pretty much how the flying and dog fighting will play out. There's still a lot left to do, but for an early Alpha it's remarkably stable (though of course, very few people are in the multi-player pool at this point, so once that ramps up we'll see how stable it stays).
There are some issues with the flight model, but once you get used to it it's not so bad. It definitely needs some refinements and iterations, and you can't re-bind any controls at this point so that's also slightly annoying, but the core of the system is pretty legit. The damage states are really cool and will make for some interesting emergent gameplay. When you get your main propulsion blown out and can only maneuver on thrusters or your main weapons get knocked out, it drastically changes how you approach a situation.

Looks cool, though I wonder how much pay-to-win is going to be incorporated into the game.
Cryengine 3 though.

If it approaches the fun of Wing Commander with modern graphics I'm in. That was a hell of a fun game to play.

They've said that once the game launches, you won't be able to buy ships on the site anymore. But we'll see, as that would be extremely lucrative. They do plan on keeping a cash shop where you can buy a limited about of in game cash over a period of time (like 1000 credits a month or something), plus vanity items.
They've also said that everything you can buy will be available in game, which is good.

Im not a fan of the genre but from the looks of it and reports, Star Citizen is shaping up to be a solid title.
