Dear Aryanna: I've been doing this and going to these since 75. Your revelation isn't anything new. Jesus. You would think BR is Vanillaville.
I don't think it was a personal thing against every human being in BR, but as a general rule, BR is a pretty sleepy mainstream town. I don't think anyone is deceived into believing it isn't. Things take a while to take off here and people have to know without a shadow of a doubt that it's safe to jump in before they do. That being said, there has always been a cool scene and places that cater to original music and art in general, as well as a group of people who support it, but to say that's anything remotely reflecting a sentiment of a significant number in Baton Rouge just isn't true. It's changing, but it's still an SEC town that thinks like one instead of a city it's become over the recent years.

I don't know about prefer, but I think there's a certain value and charm to one I suppose when you are one. The trouble here is many people here still think it actually is one. thus the all too familiar "Baton Rouge is like a big old country town".

Blues fest was great, but the blues scene has been BADLY neglected in the last couple of decades. Hopefully the success of Blues fest can lead towards a revival of it.

So where did you two cosmopolitan gentlemen move on to?

Author grew up in Opelousas, for what it's worth.
Decent article. Blues Fest was fun. Really enjoyed Naomi Shelton, and it was cool to be able to see Dr. John for free and stand in the second row. Tried to see him a bunch before, but it's always like $35+ and I'm not an ultra mega fan.
I have never lived in BR but the Garden District seemed like a really nice place to live driving through. Downtown on a Saturday was about what I'd expect of a city that size (I'm from one). I drank a $3 bloody mary, which is cheaper than I've ever seen in NOLA.

You are correct, its always been there, people just don't get into things they find interesting because their friends don't do it. Baton Rougeans have a problem about worrying what others think. But then they go to Austin and talk about how cool it is there, because it is more socially acceptable.
And thanks to the author for letting us know its ok,and we dont have to mimic New Orleans & Lafayette.

Just got back from NYC. I've seen more culture in half a block of Greenwich Village this weekend than I've ever seen in BR that wasn't copied, transferred or moved.
