Catahoula Cur questions/advice please

I have been in a thread on the OT about dogs and made me want to seek advice.
My baby boy has been saving his money to buy a Catahoula Cur. He is eleven and has saved up $400 for another dog. Does anyone know any good breeders with non-crazy dogs? I have found Catahoulas are hit or miss. Either super sweet or bat shite crazy.
We have owned blackmouths and been around a lot of mountains. I am trying to push him in that direction but little terd wants a Catahoula.

I don't know any right now but they can have a mean streak. I just put down my 14 yr old cur a few months ago and he was great around my kids. That being said, he was about 10 yrs old before I had kids and he had mellowed a lot. He was tough to break and I had to maintain the upper had for a few years off and on so I didn't want another now to start over with small kids. I think you are right to be cautious.
Best advice I can give is spend some time with the parents when you do find someone.

I have a Catahoula and they are great dogs. Yes they are hyper when they are young. But I find it pretty funny that people are saying dont get a Catahoula because they are crazy, but then suggest collies, heelers, and BMCs . All sporting dogs are going to be nuts when they are young. From my experience, a Catahoula is as good as any other of those breeds. P.S., they are no longer considered Curs

Don Abney is by far the best breeder around. He is in Abita Springs. I have an 8 month old female from him and she is a wonderful dog. abneycatahoulas.com

I've had two catahoulas. Both crazy but in their own different ways. I still love them but they've got some un-endearing qualities.

I have had one Cat. Cur and she was the sweetest, most loyal, protective dog I have ever had.
Sadly, after I lost her to cancer, I have not even wanted to get another dog, so I can only tell you about her.
Good luck, whatever you go with.
