How good are you at chess?

I'm pretty good against real people. Found a neat free app called live chess.
Some of those cats make me think they are using programs though.

At one point (back between 2003-05) I was in the high 1800's on yahoo. I'd play like 5 games a night on avg, and I'd squeeze in a few games a week with some IRL international competition. I learned a LOT more doing it that way.
I've played only a few times in recent years, most recently with my father in law who is a mechanical engineer and math genius, and I won't even lie and say I held my own. Kind of discouraged me, yet inspired me to start playing again on the reg.

I've been playing since I was a kid. My grandfather always used to say:

I've never met someone in real life who could beat me, but lots of guys cream me on the Internet.
I'm either playing the best in the world, my peers are dumb, or they cheat

What city do you live in? There's a few chess clubs around the state that meet weekly. I play at the Metairie club on Tuesdays. It's a pretty good group that meets there. I'm rated just under 2100, and we have several players over 1800.

......
But anyway, I like to play chess. Hard to find someone willing to sit down and play casually.

I'm in ascension parish. I could see myself doing something like that. Never even thought about it before
I don't play yahoo but I make it up to around 1400 on this live chess app. Seems identical to yahoo.

I'm probably the only person outside of my immediate family that even knows how to play(that I associate with). I'm not trying to say I'm mr chess champ.

I used to play with a lot of guys from Georgia (south of Russia, not Tennessee) and they always humbled me. Also there were a few Filipino guys that worshiped Chess, Bobby Fisher and Gary Kasperov like I do football, I learned a shite ton from losing to them.
Not knocking my friends or anyone close enough to actually wanna play me locally, but outside of my FIL, I'll just say they boost a very false sense of security. The intrawebz are a good source of legit competition. Not many people in our culture were passed down tricks from several generations like people in some of the shite corners of the world.

Fischer is on this "live chess" app and has kicked my arse a few times
No, that's a Ken Fischer. Never mind.

If you like/are interested in chess, you are probably the strongest player IRL in your school or area.
That's how it was with me. I loved the game growing up, and it always came naturally to me. I do well when I play online and have won some great games, but I don't play that much because I'm a bit paranoid over cheaters too.

I used to think I was really good.
Gonna share a funny story.
You want to find some damn good chess players?
Go to jail for a while. You will see some people that play at amazing speed and are really good. No lie. Don't ask how I know this.

Anyone who would consider themselves good usually beats me with ease but I can beat most infrequent players who have trouble beating the computer on Easy

This.
My brother taught me how to play when I was like 11. I remember when I was like 14 and beating him on the reg and thinking I was some fricking genius, while he was barely a novice
There are places in most communities where you can seek out really good competition, but it's usually rare to find it in your circle or church or something like that.

For someone with no knowledge of the game….are there any books you would recommend reading or should you just start playing?
Posted on 4/4/14 at 12:45 pm to Vegas Eddie
Just start playing. Once you feel pretty comfortable playing get a book and get some more in depth knowledge.
