UPS, one of the world's largest shipping and logistics companies, has decided to fire 250 workers who staged a 90-minute protest in February. The protest was organized after a long-time employee was fired over an hours dispute.

Twenty of the workers were notified of their dismissal on Monday. The remaining 230 were told they would be fired as soon as replacements are trained.

The workers, who are based in Queens, N.Y., walked off the job when Jairo Reyes, a 24-year company veteran and union activist, got in a dispute with the company over the number of hours senior staff could work, according to the New York Daily News.

The Queens workers are represented by the local branch of the Teamsters union. In a statement on their website, they describe the firings as "arbitrary discipline."

"UPS’s actions this week were a heartless attack on drivers and their families," the Teamsters Local 804 wrote.

Update 4/3: Thursday, a UPS spokesperson informed The Huffington Post that the contract between UPS and the Teamsters includes a no-strike clause. Management at the Maspeth facility, where employees worked, warned the employees as they were leaving that their jobs were at risk, the spokesperson said. The Teamsters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Good.

Not showing up to work is a fire able offense.

Um. You should probably at least for accuracy rename your OP.

They were fired for going on strike when their union agreed to a "no strike" clause.

UPS has a no strike clause, people went on strike so they fired them. I don't see the big deal, if you want the ability to strike don't work for UPS.

Interesting. No strike clause, strike, get fired. Don't see a problem here.

Agreed. Also, the union apparently didn't read their own contract.

90 minute protest. Seems harsh.

Yep.

And, apparently, they miscalculated.

Misleading thread title is misleading. Nothing to see here, total non-story.

Based on your posting history, I did not think you had a problem with it.

This made me laugh. If my boss told me this I'd laugh and say "See ya"

ETA: have no problem with UPS' actions, either.

Ya but consider the Union would probably exercise every legal right they have per the terms of their contract forcefully (as their right), and UPS is just doing the same.

I'd like to know how "dickish" or forceful the union has been previously (and vice versa), where this is now the way these two entities do business with each other these days.

I know they had a big fight like 10 years ago.

If these were warehouse workers working to get packages on planes for overnight deliveries, 90 minutes can mean the difference between the work getting done and not. This probably affected packages over the entire country...
