The salary cap is an anti-American device. I don't want the government to wipe it out, but I think that leagues that use it would be better off without it.

How can you say that, especially for a newer league like the MLS?
The reason anyone actually attends Columbus Crew games is because we have had decent success over the years. The stadium we have is already severely outdated even though it's less than 20 years old and was built soccer specific.
The only way that Columbus can compete is because of the salary cap.
Do you understand the intent and function of the cap?
There is no free market for a soccer league in the US. It would basically be a monopoly/oligopoly for a few years, all the small market teams would fold, then the remaining teams wouldn't have anyone to play and they would fold.

Also the MLS owning all the contracts needs to go

But the teams are still losing money, I'm not sure how spending more in salary will actually generate revenue above the additional cost. Maybe an additional DP?

I'm sure that you could make a compelling argument to support it. I'm not sure that I would agree with it, but there's certainly a large base that a league with more perceived quality could draw upon.
I'm pretty skeptical of the article, considering both sources. If David Beckham legitimately wants to scrap the cap, I'm not sure that I'm into that, especially since it'd probably end up as Beckham and friends. I like that MLS teams are forced to get creative and seem to be taking a very active interest in youth development. Also, wrt the draft that was brought up on the first page, what is the alternative?
I hope that MLS will be pressured by the NASL to pay more competitive salaries for players on the lower end of the roster since MLS has largely taken Scandinavia out of the equation. The Cosmos already spent their way to the title in half a season using MLS "castoffs" and Marcos Senna.

I agree with the baby steps approach. There is not enough country wide support/interest to sustain a league w/out a cap.

I agree with that re: NBA and NFL, but I'm not sure MLS is healthy enough yet to move forward without one yet

I don't agree with the argument that its anti American. Caps are not some regulation given by the government.
It's simply owners in leagues deciding what's best for their businesses and industry long term.
Nothing is stopping a rival league with no cap from competing with the established sports leagues.

Well that's your opinion but I don't think setting artificial and arbitrary wage caps is American at all.
Or maybe these days it is. The Corporatocracy gets stronger every day.

Again, I just don't see how its anti American.
The owners themselves put caps in place for THEIR business.

Thread ruiner strikes again!
But yeah I'd say they can raise it to 4 DPs and raise the minimum salary to something respectful and keep raising the cap slowly.

Lets say we're talking about a 3 team league.
Why can't owners of teams A and B just cap their wages at whatever they want for their teams rather than colluding to prevent owner of team C from paying what he wants? If Team C owner's priority is winning over profits shouldn't that be his right without Team A and B forcing him into an artificial wage cap?
And all that without getting into how unfair and un-American it is for the players. They are being colluded against to prevent Team owner C to pay him his true free market value. That is pretty much the definition of anti-free market and anti-american.

At a certain point having too many DPs just deepens the big gap between an MLS star and then 23rd man on the bench. This is why MLS teams typically get throttled in the CONCACAF Champions League because there's a enormous gap between starting Robbie Keane or even someone like Will Johnson and rotating in someone like Peterson Joseph or Péguy Luyindula.
Right now, NASL is poaching those types of end-of-the-bench or bit role players by offering slightly better one year contracts.

its not a 3 team league
the players can play in other leagues for the world market value if they wish
no league that small would have much value anyway

Yep. Teams can't afford quality depth with the system now.
You could argue that transfermarkt undervalues MLS/American players, which I do think is a small part, but this difference is the reason no MLS team has won the CCL.

It's an example for simplicity purposes.

I don't think anyone is saying that it would be great for the league if it could sustain a salary cap free league, it would be phenomenal. It's just not possible right now.

It's a perfect example actually you just don't want to hear it and have no response for it because deep down you know I'm right.
