Having said that, I'd like to see some real stats that show how much safer a backup camera is. 300 deaths and 18000 incidents per year should allow for some decent analysis

wait.....where did you get those statistics?

This. People will blame the camera / manufacturer even though they didn't turn around and look before backing up. I've seen it happen already. "But there was nothing on my camera."

Ditto for those cars that "brake automatically" if they sense a car in front is too close. I've known 2 people who were in parking garages during busy exit times whose cars were equipped with this "handy" feature. They were busy checking their phones and rear-ended the cars in front. "But that auto brake system thingy failed."

Sorry, but I am against the trend of continued dumbing down and removing personal responsibility via govt mandate.

Huh?What about dumbasses in parking lots that back out of parking spaces w/out looking? My cars been hit THREE times by these idiots.Usually I'm against govt mandates but ultimately I believe it'll save $$ in the long run..love to see stats on parking lot accidents.I would bet 80% could avoided with rear view cameras.

So, you support my idea of 10 mph highway speed limit to save the lives of children? Certainly that would save waaaaay more children than back cameras. Or, perhaps you're having problems with logic.

No I don't support you asinine idea. Here is a study which supports the idea of rear cameras.

Does anybody here actually use the backup camera? I've had one on my last three cars. I never use them. I just turn around and look all around me as I back up. It ain't hard.

I use the hell out of mine. It's great for backing up to hitch your boat to your truck. No more getting out and seeing you have 3 more inches to go. Increases my time on the water

I could see it being useful for that. But do you use it at any other time? Like backing out of your driveway?

I use it when I back out of my driveway or when I am parking. I usually back into a parking spot because it's easier to pull out. I have an F150 CC and it was a shitty turning radius and easier to back in straight than pull in for me.

I have one in the 2014 Ford F150 I drive at work (company supplied truck), it is great during the non-daytime hours. The "monitor" is in the rear view mirror and I cannot see frick all during the day.

k

spot on ... the reason it's needed is because people are too damned lazy to look behind them instead of in the rear view mirror ... i'm not crazy about another reg for cars, but most folks simply don't look behind them when backing up out of a driveway/parking spot ...

It's an attempt to protect people from drivers who don't watch where they're going anyway.

Seriously, how the hell does someone step in the car and back up without knowing it is safe to do so?

Guesstimate. $100-$200 depending on screen being counted I would if there were no other purpose for it but some cars already have the screen for radio so you could just wire it in for them. They aren't dropping in nice cameras back there. They all have the technology developed so It's not like there is a ton of necessary R&D immediately to figure out a solution.

I saw a little wireless backup camera at Advance Auto for $70. The camera was magnetic and the little screen thingy was a cigarette lighter plugin deal.

New cars under 10,000 lbs must have backup cameras by May 2018, government says.

why under 10,000 lbs? wouldn't a bigger vehicle benefit from a rear camera more?
