Really? On a COLLEGE campus we cannot tolerate 'diversity' unless it is homogenized?
Black university students should be able to shrug this one off. Look, I am all for trying to persuade them to change the policy. But, not by force or coercive shaming.
If the group holds a car was as a fund raiser ( open to public) andsays " We only wash white ppeople's cars", then there is a rightful complaint and the school admin should get involved and suspend, etc.
But, for the love of Gawd, lets try to allow college campuses to have groups that are diverse ( including private groups of single trait composition)
The Mensa Club should be allowed to exclude dullards, etc.
We can take this.

Freedom of association should work both ways, no question.

Right - while I'm all for an ignorant person (with his own money on the line, not using public property, mind you), saying, "We prefer white customers" - if they stop short of actual refusal - I can live that that (although they would rightfully be a laughingstock).

Something gets lost in this drive for diversity - while an all black organization is not only tolerated, it is encouraged (and, I maintain that a quasi-public organization like the Congressional Black Caucus should be disbanded) - and I, for one, agree that such organizations should be allowed under the right of freedom of association.

There are many obvious examples, and this is an excellent one.

Spot on, as usual.

Anti-racist event. No whites allowed.
quote:
“If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy, and white privilege to better our campus community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that,” the invitation read.

coercive shaming
I think shaming is a very effective, non govt way of changing racist attitudes. Whats your beef with it?

Sums up OP starting this thread.

Kinda' like mine, too.

I'm on my mobile, but by "coercive" I intended that we whine until the administration takes action.
I was responding to NC and his call for the chancellor to suspend.
Peer shame is awesome

Would shaming be a very effective, non govt way of convincing young black men to marry and take care of their offspring? Nope. Too racist.

That was an awesome, totally irrelevant deflection. Well done, sir.

I also noticed that the language of the resolution is absent. I think that's important to formulate an opinion. They may have taken an affirmative action approach with forced quotas for all we know.

Actually it was right on target if you want to talk about shaming. Countless women in beehive hairdos have shaken bibles at unmarried pregnant women or wayward alcholics in an attempt to shame them. If that's the way you want to roll, so be it.

This is a comment to the "article," apparently by a student at Alabama. Seems like you libs are getting your panties in a wad over nothing.
Corporal Agarn.

This article is not only wrong but incredibly offensive to any member of the Greek System at UA. Sororities did not "win the right to ban blacks" and almost every chapter has black members. The SGA Senate voted down a resolution that would do absolutely nothing, the only thing that the poorly worded resolution would do is say that "we hope you integrate", which was taken care of in September. If the resolution had passed we would still be arguing that the SGA's resolution was only a formality and not enough. No one can ever win with you people

What does that have to do with this thread? Does that mean you are against shaming or think its not effective? What point are you trying to make exactly?

Are you daft? Aren't you the one who promoted shaming as an effective tool to combat racism? I was merely pointing out that's the tactic deployed by others you probably despise, yet given the first opportunity you're the first person running to the pulpit to shake "the holy word" at the rest of us.

Perfect!

Yes, as did Ace, as did BHP.

What do you know about me and who I despise, exactly? Any other baseless assumptions you feel like making? Please, just get them all out of your system, its pretty humurous actually.

Huh? Y so mad bro? Long day?

The actions in this case are neither right, nor are they in the best interest of the university. UA is supposedly an educational environment. White kids may have a "right" to act badly. But the University has a responsibility to help them understand actions have consequences. The latter is a valuable life lesson.
Application: "Union workers have the RIGHT to strike." When they do, and the company goes belly up, they find out far too late that exercising a right isn't necessarily the best decision.
