The New Bats are Killing College Baseball (Reasons Why)

The new bats are hurting the sport of college baseball.
1. They make it impossible to disguise any weaknesses.
Let's face it, not all the kids you see playing in a NCAA uniform are going to the pros. Some of them are good enough for college, not good enough for the next level. The new bats kill those guys.
2. Recruiting
When was the last time you heard about a team in the SEC dominating with Home Runs? USCe maybe. But that is it. Recruiting is being held for pitchers, pitchers, pitchers.
Look how many hitters go pro out of high school just because they don't want to waste a couple years using a bat they will never use again. They mine as well jump straight into a wooden bat and start practicing now.
3. Draft position
This one goes along side the last one really. It is becoming more rare to see a highly touted recruit, only the hitters, coming out of HS improve his draft position. Sure, there are players that do so, Mason Katz for example, but that number is dropping. Why?
Because pitchers are going to college to increase their draft stock and take advantage of these bats. They know if they go to college they can put up sick stats and do nothing but go North on draft day.
4. Excitement Level
A lot of fans, not the diehards like myself, will go catch a baseball game for the scoring and the drama. They don't want to go watch a kid like Jared Poche pitch a nearly perfect game as a true freshman against an SEC rival. They just don't. I do. I love watching these pitchers dominate. But I am afraid the bats are helping their numbers.
Maybe not all pitchers, but a good portion of them are definitely getting help from these bats.
5. Overall Quality of Baseball
For the baseball purest, the new bats are not as big a deal because they will argue that a player needs to learn how to hit a ball in the right spot anyways. However, we didn't pay to watch minor league players develop into MLB players. We are here to watch our LSU Tigers bring home another CWS title. And we love it when they do it with power. Remember 2009? Those weren't the same bats as 1997 yet they still worked. Why did we have to change those?
6. The New Baseball
Again, this is going to hurt pitching. Pitchers are going to lose movement on their pitches forcing more balls to go smoother down the plate and allowing hitters to see pitches better. It will increase hitting but it takes away one of the greatest pitches in the history of sports, the curveball. It will not only hurt a curveball from its movement but the slider to. They will both still do what they do but on a much smaller scale of movement.
BRING BACK THE 2009 BATS!

Games are so boring I now bring the 2014 LSU Baseball Media Guide just to read something during the many lulls in the game.

High school using same bats
Posted on 3/25/14 at 7:49 pm to tadelatt
Just use Baum bats or real wood . Problem solved

Not hurting me, I've already hit more homers this season than LSU has combined.

I don't buy this. First off, it's not like you can just stop recruiting hitters, and secondly, you could argue that your pitchers don't need to be as dominating as they were before due to the advantage they have with the new bats, thus decreasing the value of a dominating pitcher and increasing the value of a hitter like Bregman. Also, I don't think there has been a significant difference in the amount of hitters that go pro out of high school since the new bats.

I don't buy this either. You don't think the major league recruiters are aware of the new bats and the effect they have on the hitters and their stats? They also know that college pitchers stats are going to be inflated due to the new bats. That's what separates them from me and you. They can look at a pitcher/hitter and determine whether their stats are due to the bats or due to their abilities.

I also agree that this will hurt pitching, but isn't that exactly what we need to do? The bats are here because they make the game safer whether you think it needed to be made safer or not. Changing the ball is an effort to offset some of the effects the new bat has had. Plus, similar to hitters now hitting with a bat much more similar to the wood bats they will use at the next level, pitchers will be using a ball much more similar to the ball they will be using at the next level. I think this makes sense, especially because I don't think the new bats are going anywhere.

tired of these extra inning games because nobody can score

the new baseballs will help I don't think it will bring us back to 2009 levels but I don't think that will happen. If we went from 6 runs a game to 3 runs a game I think the new baseball brings us to 4 or 5 runs a game.

Other teams hit ok! South Carolina has the same bats! We are just in a funk

nice list tade. you put the frustration of the bats into words quite well here.

I upvoted a tad post.

I get pissed off every time I think of the bats and how over reactive the NCAA is to every GD thing they do.

I kinda blame the bat makers.
If the composites wouldn't have been invented I'll bet no changes would have been made. (IMO)
The bat companies knew after break in those bats would hit like '90's bats.
Also I have to agree a bit on the player safety side.
The composites and the late 90's bats were too powerful for safety's sake, and also gave too much advantage to the hitters.
I like power hitting, but not everyone is a power hitter.
And super bats shouldnt be able to transform someone into one.
If I had my way, I say switch to the aluminum used in the 2000's AND use the flat seem ball.

Games are soooook boring now. Why do people always try to turn the college game into what the pros play. They're doing it in basketball as well. Fouls are called constantly trying to help scoring. Next thing you know players will be allowed to take four steps to the basket like Lebron does every night. Oh wait remember the Kentucky game? Baseball is no different. The pros are all about pitching now that the steroid era is over so college is trying to make it all about pitching as well. A kid throwing mid t80's with an average curve should not dominate but they are. It sucks we can no longer watch the Larson's of the world jack home runs. I mean what are the more memorable games for you? The 2009 World Series or all the others??

I have said this multiple times on this board the 2008/2009 era was a perfect mix for College Baseball. I am still not sure why they changed it because I love baseball and find the college game hard to watch now.

I'd pretty much rather them use wood bats since yes, that's what they'll use at the next level given the opportunity.
The reality is, giving some dudes in college baseball an aluminum bat is f'n crazy! Hell, when I played HS ball in Florida more than 20 years ago, there were kids in HS where frankly, the pitcher was taking his life into his own hands.
Sure, for many college hitters, the aluminum bat is fine. But, if they are going to change, this middling bat is for the birds.
