ZZ Top played at a bar across the street from "Baton Rouge Beach" on Stanford in the 70's.

I saw these guys before before Billy Gibbons sported a perpetual beard.

Hootie...

I used to work at a radio station back in the day in Columbia and Hootie and the Blowfish were playing a St. Patrick's Day thing for us. They were relatively popular around town, but certainly not nationally.

About a year later - they went big time...

REM - The Bayou
SRV - Chief's little club in Kenilworth

Expand on that. Us Gen Xers were probably in diapers or playing Pac-Man on Atari 2600 when you saw these shows but they are very interesting now!

I saw Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins open for Chili Peppers in 91 at the Municipal Auditorium. Eddie Vedder was going nuts swinging everywhere. They stole the show. The next year they had one of the biggest albums of all time.

I was at this show too. Vedder ride the crowd right over me. I also met James Iha in the floor in the pit.

Watched Zac Brown Band play in the upstairs of a little bar at Five Points in downtown Birmingham. Probably was no more than 50-60 in the crowd.

Man, that brings up a sad memory for me. My cousin went the year before and saw Metallica open up for Ozzy on The Ultimate Sin tour at UNO. He barely even knew who Metallica was. He said they had the whole graveyard set up as they were touring for Master of Puppets.

Anyway, he said people were cheering for Metallica to come back out, pretty much stole the show. We all became fans right afterwards. Cliff Burton died just a few months after that...

Eta: sad memory since I didn't get to go, I was a little too young
