Wow that is an even worse option. That means the heavier long action actually now weighs even more than the normal amount over a short action because they add a block to it.
Why in the hell would a company do that?

I've got a 270 A bolt in RH that my grandpa got as a retirement gift that he gave me before he passed still in the box. I've used it a few years now and have zero complaints on that caliber. My plan with it is to put it away and give to my son when he's old enough to use it. I've also got (2) alt 6's. One in 7400 and one in 742 repeater mode.
I'm leaning towards a 270 simply because my son and I will be shooting the same caliber one day and ammo is readily available. I've never owned a 308 and awfully intrigued by its versatility. The 270wsm is another beast in and of itself, but totally annialiates deer within 200 yds.
My biggest concern is the supply of ammo 20 years from now. That being said, I've ruled out the 270wsm and down to a 270 or 308. I already own the best alt 6 ever made.

You and son shooting same caliber is a good thing. Less ammo to worry about and less chance he grabs the wrong stuff to load his.
Unless you plan to reload rge 308 versitility may be a bit oversold.

Great rifle, i have one in 270 and 338 win mag, I love them both, not a bad choice in the calibers you mentioned
But do your self a favor before you buy the leupold, look through a vortex viper PST 4x16 - 50, you can get them at optic planet for $650 and it is heads and shoulders above my vari x 3 , plus has illuminated reticle, side focus, turret knobs, and most importantly a 30 mm tube

If I were choosing between a 270 and 308 in a bolt gun I would go with the 270. If I wanted an auto or short action light weight I would go with the 308.
I don't think I have ever been in a store that sold ammo and they didn't have 270.

If local white tail...whats wrong with .223, .243, or the classic 30-06?
.308 is plenty for louisiana white tails. 30-06 is a bit overkill IMO

243
I'm a fan 30.06 shooter and a fan of 308
However, 2 guys at the camp shoot 243 with great success. I have shot their rifles and love the feel of the shoot. One guy hand loads and the other does not.

I have my grandfather's 742, it's killed many a deer. I retired it several years ago when he passed away.
I now hunt with a T3 Lite in 7mm-08. So far it's done the job. It's a right hand model but if you want to shoot it one day I'll let you borrow it.

I have the T3 Left hand model left hand in .308. Tikka makes a great rifle for the price....one of the best values in rifles in my opinion.
I have a .270 Remington but the .308 t3 is on another level than any of the other rifles I own or have shot. I am super pleased with my choice and esp caliber. Plenty of knockdown power for game around my region and enough range to reach out.

I think either of these are fine deer rifles, but I'm curious why anyone would make this statement. The 308 and the 30-06 shoot the same round. There might be 100 fps difference in velocity. Aren't you kind of splitting hairs?
The real answer to the OP's question is, flip a coin. I have shot deer with everything from a .223 to a 300 win mag, and the deer all died shortly after impact. Unless you are picking a gun to take to Africa, it really doesn't matter what caliber you pick. A well placed bullet is the key to killing whitetail deer. The 30-30 is a dog compared to a 270 WSM, but years ago 30-30s killed more deer in this country than you can count.

Of those listed, 308
But my favorite whitetails round is the 06

I've whacked a shitton of critters over the years with the old Model 70 .270. Bullets always easy to find, and kills whitetails and such very effectively. Really good ballistics, especially when you dial in the ammo your gun likes.
Bought my youngest son a 7MM08 as his first gun, after a lot of research, because, admittedly, I wanted to be able to play with it too. Awesome gun-I've shot a couple animals with it on trips he couldn't go on and it's a sweet caliber, just harder to find ammo.

270, then 308. Both ammo are available everywhere and is low cost . My 270 shoots less than 2 inches at 200 yards and doesn't have much recoil.

I have a 270 in Rem Model 700 that was my dads gun.Its a model from the mid 90's and that 270 will knock em flat.
My wife has a 308 and its a great caliber as well. The deer she has killed with it have not gone far at all.She shoots the Federal Fusions.
If I had to pick one I would go with the 308.I dont reload and the ammo selection is really good and pretty easy to find something almost anywhere.
Anything 300yds and less the deer wont know th difference.
