You gonna buy one of those ridiculous treadmills that lets you walk in a bunch of directions and doesn't let you fall over? I'm sure those are cheap.
No you will still be sitting in a chair with this ridiculous piece of plastic on your head.

yeah, but...

Yeah, but I'll be able to control my cyborg clone with it. I can get into all sorts of crazy antics without any consequences, and those experiences will be as real to my brain as if I had actually performed the in real life.

Do I need to explain how joystick work?
I believe there is a huge market for an affordable and high-quality VR experience. There are a bunch of applications for this in gaming and outside of gaming. Hell, I could use this at work to better visualize spaces I design. You don't have the same experience moving a mouse around a screen as you do moving your head and eyes around.
Think of it in terms of audio VR, which is essentially surround sound. When you watch a movie, which one is more immersive and which one is more enjoyable? One on a single speaker, or one on a 5.1+ sound system? Surround sound is both more immersive and more enjoyable of the majority of people.
If a flat screen on your wall and a shitty speaker do it for you, then by all means enjoy what you like, but don't underestimate the demand for something like this.

Nothing to do with how you look.

Not even really all that comparable
Demand for this

is still massively higher than for VR

I remember playing virtual reality at the mall when I was 10.

Every blog post I've read or interview I've watched of people who've tried the Oculus Rift has been glowing. They've nearly all said it's amazing, unlike 3D, which most were lukewarm on at best.
Why are you so negative about this? What aspects of it have you unconvinced? I'm asking because I think VR is going to be extremely big over the next couple of years with applications that extend beyond traditional gaming and when someone like John Carmack is clearly excited, it makes me optimistic.

The video I saw of someone wearing an oculus rift while on one of those treadmills where you could walk around appeals to me. That is cool and immersive to me.
The part that doesn't appeal to me is just sitting in chair with this thing on my head just so I can look in different directions. It just seems like something that would get old very quick.
The illumaroom thing Microsoft showed off a couple of years ago appeals to me much more and I think would to the general public even more.

The anti-Sony posts because UH started the thread is very dumb. Edit: I looked back and he didn't start the thread.

I like the idea, just hope amazon buys out PS so someone can produce this.

Well, individual reactions to this went exactly as expected.
I think the issue here will be the number of games utilizing it. If it's only Sony first-party games taking advantage of this, it is guaranteed to be a flop. I think one way to bolster the game library is VR remakes. We'll see. Jonathan Blow has been experimenting with VR for The Witness.

This IMO won't redifine gaming completely but I do believe that it creates a VR gamer fan base as large or larger than handhelds.
In fact it'll likely replace handheld consoles.

WTF? People are just going to be out in public with their Star Trek eye goggle face mask Matrix machines? Sounds legit.

Well you have the usual suspects in here to rain on the parade. If it was MS announcing it first you would have a thread full of xboxers creaming their collective pants and UH and Galvo trying to ruin their party.
RTR would be arguing the exact opposite and Geaux would be agreeing with everything he said.
Bottomline...this is that innovation thing that the xbox fanboys were trying to claim early on that Sony didn't have and XBone did, with the Xbones shitty DRM policies and a still useless Kinect. Remember the sugarcoating going on then?

I don't understand the practicality of this, though. I mean, you are basically wearing a console on your face.

I don't know enough about the thing. It could be complete shite or could be awesome. That wasn't my point.

I know your point was douchebags gonna douchebag, but I think we've come to expect that here pretty much all the time.
