My dad has been talking about making trip this summer and camp over night. I've been fishing there, but never camped. What are y'all experiences, advice

1. It's illegal to do so, but I'd love to anyway
2. no one will enforce you trespassing, so do it
3. Bugs will carry you away
4. I'd park the boat in Trinity Bayou--you'd get the most protection there.
5. Bring a lantern and gig
6. Beware of the Rougaroo.
Put "paging Conundrum" in your title. He used to have a camp out that way and could tell you more.
ETA: this statue used to be out there, but it's gone now:

I thought about doing something like this once. For about 35 seconds.

Did that a couple times out on Breton Sound Islands. Great fishing, shite load of small sand sharks that swam thru our legs, sank one boat due to storm at night(anchor pulled when wind shifted, washed up on beach), 10 very drunk guys, one burnt tent, many bug bites.
Oh, but we had fun.

So what would you do with your boat to make sure that doesnt happen? I just figured if you lit a fire on the beach it would possibly look like a distress signal and draw more attention.

Use three anchors from three different points. We were open to the gulf and the guy didn't have a big enough anchor to start with.

Been thinking about it for a few years. I can't believe they'd swoop down and run you off. Would be a bitch if they did at night though.

Why is it illegal to camp there?

I'd have to guess the few screwed it up for the many. Trash, fires, problems in general. Seems to be the norm.

I think the island is leased by Louisiana land exploration. There are no trespassing signs all over.

Never did it because the camp is so close, but we are out there 24/7 night fishing. Its a blast. Trinity bayou or the edges of the isle would work. This year we are thinking of bringing the bowfishing rig out there for flounder.. anyone think that would work?

I have done this twice. It was fun but I would not do it again. The fish would only bite early in the morning and late in the evening it seemed like, and it was hot as hell with not much to do during the day. On one of the trips we had a bad storm pass thru with lightning very close and the wind wrecked our tents. It was a mess. My advice is to bring plenty of beer and ice.

i've been heavily considering doing this but with a few differences.
i was thinking of picking a recently restored island such as Pelican or Scoefield out of Empire because
a) its a much shorter boat ride back civilization
b) islands were just restored so they are relatively high, dry, and sandy compared to the low marshy nature of others
c) still in cell phone range for the bigger emergencies
the bug factor and the wtf would we do for an entire day factor have held me back. im thinking an afternoon to afternoon trip could be best as a test case. we have about 50 crab nets we could run on top of the fishing aspect.

My dad has been wanting to camp there for a long time, so I told him I was game. I want to at least go one time. I think we're gonna set up camp in the afternoon, fish that evening, camp, fish the morning, then head home. And we will have plenty of beer
