the .270 is what he think he wants...just cause his friend has one that he has put hands on...I'm thinking .243 cause of weight, recoil, and $

I shot a .223 at 7 or 8, then a .243 for another year or two, then a .270 when I was about 11 or 12.

I still shoot a .270 as a 32 year old.

If he is older than 10 go with a .270, he can shoot it for the rest of his life and avoid ridicule from the OB.

My fiancé's nephew is about 4' tall and maybe 80 lbs. he shoots a 7mm-08.
I started on a .243 when I was 8 and got a .270 when I was 13. I still use the .243 from time to time when I'm in the woods but the .270 will reach out and touch em.
I still use the the .270 the majority of the time. Can't go wrong with it.

How old is he? Are you limiting yourself to those two calibers?

thanks for the responses...i am thinking .270 as well...the ideas about recoil etc were posed from his stepdad(gasp)...we are going in half a piece on this thing..we both hunt...i agree that the .270 is what will carry him into manhood...he is 13...

also yes those are the choices...he can get something bigger when he is paying for it..

at 13 I would go .270 maybe put a slip on recoil pad if he has a issue at first but it won't be long until that won't be needed.

My daugter was shooting my .270 at 13/14...

I wasn't going to suggest anything bigger, I was going to suggest a 7mm08. 270 will work fine for a 13 year old though and will be a gun he can use for the rest of his life and hopefully hand down to his kid one day.

Oh heck yeah. He's definitly ready for a .270.

Are you going to get him a nice one, or a beater?

He won't feel a thing when he's pew pewing a deer. Sighting in was the only time I was nervous to shoot when I was young.

Christ. Must be his step dads idea.

Just kidding.

The reason I asked, was because I shot a Ruger M77 as a kid. I put a fair amount of dings and scratches on it, but thats okay on a gun like that. That's what my kids will shoot first. I now carry a nice Browning with a walnut stock. I baby it any time it is out of the safe.
