European Soccer question....Attendance related...

European soccer has the biggest stars making the most amount of money. Some of which are at insane levels.
Why does it seem to me that when I watch highlights of the games the stands(attendance) are at best half full????
can anybody offer any insight?

I just have to ask...you've been registered since 2009 and yet you don't know there is a soccer board?

Huh? That's really not true. It's one of the mysteries of the game, but there are lots of games with horrendous attendance. Lots of games.

Places like Italy or Spain may have lower attendance because the economy blows

Today was a day of friendlies, equivalent to preseason games. That's why they weren't full today.

Even when the economy was fine, you would see games with crappy attendance.
These are some 2012-13 attendance numbers (I know, the Eurozone was fricked that year).
Germany: 42K
EPL: 36K
Spain: 30K
Mexico: 25K
Italy: 25K
Argentina: 19K
Dutch: 19K
France: 19K
MLS: 19K
Japan: 17K
Brazil: 15K
Turkey: 12K
Russia: 12K
Belgium: 12K

Germany is one of the few countries with affordable ticket prices
Posted on 3/5/14 at 8:21 pm to hendersonshands
True. they fill up their stands pretty well.
To answer the OP's question, I am just guessing, but it is probably because this was a meaningless exhibition game with high prices.

1. Because it is an international FRIENDLY - preseason...no one gives a shite.
2. I hope you are not talking about the Portugal-Cameroon match. The best player in the world wasn't in that one.

He's been the best player in the world for the past year

Stadium-wise, all of the NFL's teams have big stadiums. There are about 5-6 clubs in each of the major European leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy) that resemble the NFL. The rest of the clubs have much smaller stadiums.

True, but even in the small stadiums, you'll see lots of empty seats, especially when it's two mid-tier teams playing each other.

Yesterday was international friendlies, mainly being played in neutral countries.
Would you go to Germany to watch a Saints preseason game?
It was also midweek, and alot of games on mainland Europe dont finish until nearly 11pm so they aren't exactly helping to bring in the young kids and families.
Overall attendances blow in Italy because their stadiums are HORRIBLE alot are pretty much all concrete, their economy blows and the ultras/hooligans have scared of families. Spain has stupidly late games aswell which doesnt help alot of non Madrid/Barcelona teams.
Theres also a lot more saturation in the markets, its not just one team per city, London for example probably has 8-10 teams in the top 2 tiers of English football, and some teams simply have stadiums too big for that, you arent going to get 20k people watching 2nd rate (at best) standard when theres so many better options, they only have very local support.

That's really not a fair comparison because in most countries they have way more teams per capita than we do in the US. London, for example, has like 8 "major" teams and a ton more minor teams. And that's just soccer, nevermind cricket or rugby.
