i searched, but not much on the topic (probably due to limited timeframe of search feature).

I'm trying to decide if this is a habit worth forming. I've bought/refilled them on and off for the past 8 years or so, but recently three new shops opened up within easy walks of my various temporary and permanent dwelling places. so may become a ritual.

I've always just bought them for novelty's sake, but I'm beginning to see the value as good shops open up with beers you can't get in bottles.

i got a true 64+oz pour of 11.5% 2xIPA today (I've forgotten the name because I've sort of polished off the growler--bye bye 2-day sobriety coin) for $12.

It made 5 pint glasses (w/ head) and was really freaking good. I used to not really see the value in growlers, but this would've been $50+ worth of [this] beer at the pub. (10-12 oz snifters at $5-6 ea.)

not sure what my question is, but growl away.

If you can polish off the growler with in a day or 2 its a good deal. But I don't think anybody on here drinks that much in a day.

Unless I'm misreading, it would be half of that. Five to six 12 oz. snifters would constitute a growler, not 10. Still absolutely a better deal to buy the growler, but it's not 1/4 the price, closer to 1/2.

I love my stainless steel growler. If baton rouge didnt suck, i would use it alot more. When i go home to nj and visit breweries i use my growler a ton.

I dont really do growlers all that often unless you have no practical option as the brewery doesnt bottle/can.

Using your example of 64oz for $12 or roughly $2.25 for every 12oz pour. You can buy a six pack of 2xIPA for $11 locally which is $1.83 for a 12oz pour. So not only do you get a better value from buying the six pack but you also get the flexibility of drinking on your own schedule.

Growlers are a cool novelty, but like I said they usually only pay off when the product isnt available in cans/bottles.

I don't use my growler much because after opening, you need to finish that growler quick. I usually don't like to feel obligated to one beer, but nothing beats a freshly filled growler from the brewery.

I remember watching the TV Series "Gunsmoke" back in the 1950's and watching Miss Kitty tell the few remaining customers "last call, boys" as she wistfully watched Marshall Dillon walk out the swinging doors while Sam the Barkeep filled Doc Adams a "Bucket of Beer" for the evening. Old Doc would then walk (amazingly well for a guy who had been throwing them back all night) back to the alley way and up the stairwell leading up to his Non-ADA compliant office, where he would carefully place the small galvanized bucket of suds on the examination table and lovingly stare at his late night alcoholic treat with slightly glazed eyes before hearing the echoes of a gunshot that introduced the plot element of that week's serial episode.

A few questions:

1 - Was Doc's bucket of beer the Growler of that time and place?

2 - How did Hoveround™ power scooter patients get up those thirteen steps into Doc's office for their monthly Ambien prescription?

3 - Would a Circle K have made a killing selling late night brewskies, microwaved HotPockets and SlimJims to the citizens of Dodge City, and why didn't that wonderful business opportunity occur to some entrepreneurial Iranian American?

4 - Why the heck did Matt go home each night to that cold, hard jailhouse cot when Miss. Kitty seemed so willing and eager to share her sleepnumber equipped bed with her Big Baboo hunk of western lawman?

Inquiring minds and all....
