Just get the nike+ app. Go out for a light jog one day and then keep trying to beat your distance/pace records. That got me from a mile walk to running 3.1 miles a day in about 2 months.

The guy is 260 pounds. I don't think the guy I'd in shape enough to do interval training.
Insanity for him would be insane. The only thing that HIIT type training would do for him is get him injured real fast.
From the sounds of things being close to 300 pounds and dropping down to 260 is a good start.
I would recommend you start doing light weight training with light cardio. As for running, do a couple miles a day at first. Start by walking the whole thing first. When OK with that, start interspersing running in there till you can run the whole thing. Do a beginning right training thing.
The key here is do slow and light training when beginning because you are older and out of shape and you risk for injury is going to be highest at the beginning if you push yourself to hard.
Also I would recommend you start everything off with a visit to your doctor and have him do a quick physical to make sure you are healthy enough to start exercising. This is important.
Don't listen to the guys wanting you to do intervals right now, I don't think you are in shape for that yet. You have to enjoy what you are doing to keep doing it. You have to stay healthy to keep doing it.
Slow, light, and steady will win the race for you till you can handles more.

Run/walk for a minute each 7-8x total isn't exactly going to kill him. And his 1 minute of running can be at whatever pace is comfortable to him.

The key to dominating a 5k is to consume as much fettuccine alfredo as humanly possible and then shoot high for a 5.3 minute mile for each consecutive mile.

I'd say don't get caught up in time/pace since you're just starting to run. It's easy to get down on yourself when you have slow day or others might be faster. I think once you can run a couple miles without stopping then you can focus more on your times.

I hate to run, but it's part of my job description so I have to do it. Running should be a part of a balanced fitness plan. It works, but after 40 you should also be doing some strength training which is sounds like you're doing. Couch to 5k is a good program because it starts very slow, which is the key. Enter a 5k race a couple of months from now and tell some friends and family about it. This will give you something to train for and the fact that others know about it will give you a little more motovation.
If you really want to burn calories, take up swimming as well.

I started back to the gym last October and have lost about 15 pounds. I used to work out a lot but let myself creep up to 250 and lost strength over the last several years. I would go to the gym very sporadically. I would work out for 2 months then lay off for 6. Wasn't going well. I've been eating healthier (try to keep my calories under 1850). I hit the weights. I'm more interested in muscle building. Strength is coming back. But I feel it's good to get a little cardio type worked in. I'm getting back into mountain biking, so I start every workout on the bike. I usually do 15-20 minutes. Good warmup for working out. I do pretty high resistance on the bike. Legs have actually gotten really strong, and I have no problem hitting the big hills on my real bike now. Then after the workout, I play a few games of 2 on 2 bball.
This system seems to be working for me right now. My only problem is keeping it up for the next 6 months (I like going by short term goals).

and to those that say interval training is stupid at that size....no it isn't. His intervals are not going to be as fast or as long as those in shape and his rest intervals will be longer. But he can still do them and he should. Much easier on the body then long distance.
and light weight for reps burns less calories then lifting heavy and will have less of an effect on strength levels which will not have as big of a effect on his quality of life.

I have been doing a body weight circuit in my garage in the morning. I lost almost 10 lbs in the first week with the exercise and diet change.

Good thing about a morning run...it sure shakes things loose.

The thing lots of beginners don't understand about running is that you aren't really supposed to get winded.
Run at a pace where you can hold a conversation. Seriously. It's okay if your conversation involves more breathing than normal, but you should be able to at least exchange words with someone.
Yes, it's slow at first but after a year you'll be amazed at how fast you can go and chit-chat. Most running clubs are more social than anything else.

Isnt running better for weight loss than working out?
I've been working out for 30-40 mins a day and running for 20-30 mins a day after for 2 mths 5 days a week.
Ive lost 10 lbs from 220 to 210.
Im much stronger and tighter.
What else could i do to lose more weight besides diet?
Ps i have been eating what i want but smaller portions.

Not usually. Lifting heavy weights tends to burn more total calories then running an equal amount of time. But your diet should be the main reason you are losing weight. The heavy lifting and running should be to make you stronger and be able to do every day things easier.
