This. Allen Iverson is the only guy I can think of that would fit that bill.

A true NBA centerpiece has to be a 4, 5, or an absurd 3, period.

For example, Kobe is an elite SG, but no team built around him has ever done shite.

The answer right now is LeBron James for what he did in Cleveland and possibly Dwight because of what he did in Orlando. The next closest player to a true centerpiece is AD, IMO.

I'm not saying he couldn't be a franchise player but I don't think he is on the level of those other guys who actually built teams up from the bottom.

Agree. I think most of the players who in their first couple of years and are really good, are all kind of wait and see.

Except, AD, but I'm biased.

I agree 110% with all of that.

ETA: What AI did with that Philly team in 2000 (or 2001?) is insane.

So AD and Dwight, but not Durant. Seems legit.

This is the only real answer. CP3 carried some bad NOLA teams, too.

Durant is undoubtedly a true center piece.

But there is no question he has had more help than Lebron did in 2007 or Dwight Howard had in 2009(if that's the right year)

LeBron, Durant

and then everyone else.

Umm... Are you saying the Lakers most recent title teams were built around Pau and Bynum?

I think Kobe gets vastly overrated but to say teams built around him haven't done shite is nuts.

He was good with Shaq.

Then missed the playoffs and was the #8 seed and lost in the first round the next 2 years.

Then they got Gasol and Bynum and they were good again.

So while Kobe is great, he has never done anything without really good to great bigs.

I said AD is the next closest, but I did not include him in a true centerpiece yet. FWIW, I'd have Durant right behind AD, and that has nothing to do with their ability and everything to do with their position and scarcity.

It is almost impossible to build a team around a jumpshooter, hence the knock on Durant. This season is the first time Durant has given a glimmer of hope that he can carry a team on his own. I understand that AD is more of a reach than Durant at this point, but I can get production from a replacement much cheaper at SG than I can at PF or C.

Not if the jumpshooter shoots consistently at a high percentage.

No not at all. I don't think being the best player on your team equals being the centerpiece.

If you had to pick a player to build your team around, even a 2006 Kobe Bryant can't be very high on the list. It is not a knock on Kobe, it is a business decision. Which player is more valuable relative to his salary and replacement cost? The answer is some SFs, PFs, and Cs - freaks like Jordan and Iverson notwithstanding.

So what you are saying is that Kobe couldn't do anything until he had other good players built around him. Who knew

What has a franchise built around chris paul ever done in the playoffs? Add Dwight, remove Chrissy. At least a team built around Dwight has made the finals once(soon to be 2x in the next year or two).

I wouldn't be so sure about that...

Damn. I thought you at least just forgot about Durant, that's some next level homer justification there.

Durant got 4-1'd by Memphis last season without Westbrook. He shot 51% during the regular season and 46% in the playoffs without Westbrook (i think he was hurt in the 1st game vs houston).

Durant is no doubt a stud and is probably in the same league as LBJ etc, but he fell short last season and hasn't won anything without Westbrook (Who is a top 10 player when healthy) by his side
